What is prompts.chat?
prompts.chat is a free, community-built library of prompts for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and other assistants. Companies can use the public site or deploy their own private prompt library from the open-source code.
The project started in December 2022 as Awesome ChatGPT Prompts and had about 171,000 GitHub stars as of September 28, 2026. Prompts are organized by categories and tags, can be saved and copied with variables filled in, and are also published as a CSV file and a Hugging Face dataset. A self-hosting wizard sets up branding, authentication via GitHub, Google, Apple, Azure AD or email, private prompts, comments and optional AI features, with PostgreSQL as database. A CLI, a Claude Code plugin and an MCP server connect the library to other tools.
prompts.chat AI features and use cases
- Finds prompts by meaningThe optional AI search uses embeddings to find prompts that match the intent of a query, not only its keywords. Staff find a suitable template faster in a large collection.
- Generates new promptsSelf-hosted instances can enable AI generation to draft new prompts. Teams can extend their internal library without writing every template from scratch.
- Serves prompts to AI toolsThrough the MCP server, assistants such as Claude can look up and use prompts from the library directly. Approved templates reach employees inside the tools they already use.
What sets prompts.chat apart
- All prompts are CC0 public domain, so they can be reused commercially without attribution.
- Self-hosting supports Azure AD sign-in, which fits companies on Microsoft 365.
- No paid tier; the project is funded by sponsors.
Where prompts.chat is strongest
Community project without a country focus; the interface is available in English, Spanish, Japanese, Turkish and Chinese.
Questions to ask before you buy prompts.chat
The public site is community content, so review prompts before you recommend them internally. For a private company library, plan who hosts and updates the instance and its PostgreSQL database. The AI search sends queries to OpenAI through your own API key, which requires a data processing agreement with OpenAI.
