How to choose RAG frameworks, rerankers and document parsers (October 2026)
Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) lets a language model answer questions from your own documents instead of only its training data. This category covers the building blocks: RAG frameworks and engines that connect documents, search and models; rerankers that sort search results by relevance before they reach the model; and document parsers that turn PDFs, scans and Office files into clean text and tables. Most entries are open source, some are hosted APIs, and several offer both.
AI appears at several points in a RAG pipeline. Parsers use layout models, OCR and visual language models to read complex pages. Frameworks extract entities into knowledge graphs, combine vector and keyword search, and let agents call tools. Rerankers are specialized models that compare a query with each candidate passage and score it, so the language model receives the most relevant passages.
Before you choose, check the license carefully, because some model weights are free only for non-commercial use or below a revenue threshold. Decide whether documents may leave your infrastructure: self-hosted parsers and rerankers keep data local but need servers and maintenance, while hosted APIs are faster to start and bill per page, token or search. Ask about hosting regions, data retention and a data processing agreement, and test quality on your own documents and languages.
Questions about RAG frameworks, rerankers and document parsers (October 2026)
What does a reranker add to a RAG system?
A first search step returns many candidate passages quickly. A reranker then scores each candidate against the question with a more precise model and reorders them, so the language model receives the most relevant context.
Can RAG run without sending documents to a cloud provider?
Yes. Open-source frameworks, parsers and rerankers can run on your own servers together with a locally hosted language model. You then carry the cost of hardware and maintenance.
Why does document parsing matter?
If tables, columns or scanned pages are read incorrectly, search finds the wrong passages and answers suffer. A good parser keeps structure such as headings and tables, which improves every later step.
