How to choose MCP servers for business (October 2026)

This category covers servers for the Model Context Protocol, the open standard that lets AI assistants such as Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Copilot connect to other software. It is split into five areas: official servers maintained by the vendor of the connected app, community servers built by independent developers, office and productivity apps such as Notion, Jira or Confluence, developer and cloud tools such as GitHub or error monitoring, and databases and data sources.

An MCP server does not contain its own AI model. It exposes tools that an assistant can call, for example searching issues, reading a page, running a database query or clicking through a web page. The AI in the connected assistant decides which tool to use, fills in the parameters and works with the result. Some servers are hosted by the vendor and connect through OAuth, others run locally as a small process or in a container with an access token.

Every tool call acts with the permissions of the connected account, and the data returned is passed to the model provider of your AI client. Before connecting a server, check whether it is maintained by the vendor or by the community, whether it offers a read-only mode or fine-grained tool selection, and how credentials are stored. Define which assistants are approved for which data, keep manual approval for write actions and review connections regularly.

Questions about MCP servers for business (October 2026)

What is an MCP server?

It is a connector that follows the Model Context Protocol and exposes tools of an application, such as search or create functions, to AI assistants. The assistant calls these tools during a conversation and works with the results.

Should I prefer official or community servers?

Official servers are maintained by the vendor of the connected app and often hosted with OAuth. Community servers can cover gaps, such as self-managed installations, but come without vendor support, so review their code and maintenance activity.

Is it safe to connect an MCP server to company data?

It can be, with safeguards: use accounts with minimal rights, enable read-only mode where available, keep manual approval for write actions and check which model provider receives the returned data.
