What is Amazon Textract?
Amazon Textract is an AWS machine learning service that extracts text, handwriting, layout and structured data from scanned documents. It suits companies that already run workloads on AWS and need document processing at volume.
Textract provides five APIs: Detect Document Text for OCR, Analyze Document for forms, tables, layout, signatures and queries, Analyze Expense, Analyze ID and Analyze Lending for mortgage packages. It runs in AWS regions in the US, Canada, Europe (Ireland, London, Frankfurt, Paris) and Asia Pacific. Content is stored at rest in the region used, and customers can opt out of having content used for service improvement.
Amazon Textract AI features and use cases
- Extracts forms and tablesAnalyze Document detects key-value pairs such as a name and its value, plus tables with rows and columns. Operations teams can load structured data from forms without building templates for each layout.
- Answers questions about a documentQueries let you ask in plain language for a value, for example a date or an amount, and return the answer with a confidence score. Custom Queries adapt this to your documents with as few as ten annotated samples.
- Reads receipts and invoicesAnalyze Expense extracts vendor, totals and line items from receipts and invoices. Finance teams can feed expense and payables processes with less manual entry.

Opt out of content use for service improvement through the AWS AI services opt-out policy if documents must stay in your region; otherwise some content may be stored in another region. Check the per-page price of each feature, since Forms, Tables and Queries cost more than plain OCR. Review compliance reports in AWS Artifact.
