What is Xinference?

Xinference is an open-source model serving platform from Xorbits that runs open language, embedding, rerank, image, audio and video models on premises or in the cloud and exposes them through one OpenAI-compatible API.

Xinference wraps several inference back ends, including vLLM, SGLang and llama.cpp, and adds a model registry, a web UI, a command line and distributed deployment across machines. It integrates with frameworks such as LangChain and Dify. Xorbits, whose GitHub organization lists Singapore as its location, offers an enterprise edition in addition to the Apache 2.0 community edition. The GitHub API showed about 9,600 stars and a push on September 28, 2026.

Xinference AI features and use cases

  • Runs the full RAG model set in-houseBesides chat models, Xinference serves embedding and rerank models, the building blocks of retrieval-augmented generation. Teams can host every model a document search needs on their own servers.
  • Switches models behind one APIApplications call one OpenAI-compatible endpoint while administrators swap the model behind it. Developers can compare open models without rewriting integration code.
  • Adds speech, image and OCR modelsThe platform also serves audio, image generation, video and OCR models, according to the documentation and README. One deployment can cover transcription or document reading next to chat.

What sets Xinference apart

  • Orchestrates several inference engines (vLLM, SGLang, llama.cpp) instead of implementing its own.
  • Covers embedding and rerank models alongside chat models, with ready integrations for LangChain and Dify.

Questions to ask before you buy Xinference

Decide whether the community edition is enough or whether you need the enterprise edition, whose features and price are available only on request. Self-hosting requires GPU capacity and staff for updates and monitoring. Check each model's license, especially for commercial use.
