What is BGE-M3?

BGE-M3 is an open embedding model for search and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) that supports more than 100 languages and three retrieval methods, widely used as a building block for company knowledge search.

BGE-M3 turns text into numerical vectors that search systems compare. It can perform dense retrieval, multi-vector retrieval and sparse retrieval similar to BM25 at the same time, handles inputs from short sentences to documents of 8,192 tokens and works in more than 100 languages. The developers recommend hybrid retrieval plus re-ranking. Code is in the FlagEmbedding repository, and the model had more than 36 million downloads in the last month at our check.

BGE-M3 AI features and use cases

  • Powers internal knowledge searchDocuments are embedded once and searched by meaning rather than exact words. Employees find policies and manuals even with different wording.
  • Searches across languagesA German query can find an English or Polish document. International teams search one shared knowledge base.
  • Combines keyword and semantic searchSparse and dense outputs from one model enable hybrid search without a second system. Search quality improves for product codes and names.

What sets BGE-M3 apart

  • Three retrieval modes from one model reduce the number of components in a search stack.
  • MIT license and very high download numbers, so it is supported by most vector databases and frameworks.

Questions to ask before you buy BGE-M3

Self-hosting means your team runs, secures and updates the model, including GPU capacity, monitoring and patching. Check the license terms for commercial use and keep a record of which version you deploy. If outputs feed decisions about people, a human must stay in the loop. Changing the embedding model later means re-embedding all documents, so test retrieval quality on your own data first.
