What is CVAT?

CVAT is an open-source annotation tool for computer vision teams that label images, video, 3D point clouds and audio. It can be self-hosted for free or used as the paid cloud service CVAT Online.

The project is maintained by the cvat-ai organization on GitHub under the MIT license and had about 16,800 stars with commits on September 28, 2026. CVAT supports bounding boxes, polygons, masks, tracks and 3D cuboids, task management, review and export to common training formats. CVAT Online adds hosted storage, API access, reports and quality features such as ground-truth jobs and honeypots, while the Enterprise edition is self-hosted with support.

CVAT AI features and use cases

  • Pre-annotates with vision modelsAutomatic annotation runs models such as SAM or YOLO on images and video frames and creates draft labels. Annotators check and correct instead of drawing every shape.
  • Uses your own models for labelingTeams connect their own or Hugging Face models to label new data. As the model improves, less manual work remains for each new batch.
  • Measures annotation qualityGround-truth jobs and honeypots compare annotator output with known answers. Project leads spot weak labels before they reach the training set.

What sets CVAT apart

  • MIT-licensed open source that can run entirely on your own servers.
  • Supports 3D point clouds and audio besides images and video.

Questions to ask before you buy CVAT

Self-hosting keeps data in your own infrastructure but requires your team to run updates, backups and GPU servers for automatic annotation. With CVAT Online, clarify the hosting region and data processing terms. SSO is only available on yearly Team plans and Enterprise.
