What is Cytora?
Cytora is a digital risk processing platform for commercial insurers, wholesale brokers and MGAs. It turns incoming submissions into structured, enriched risk data and routes them to underwriting, and since September 2025 it has been a business unit of Applied Systems.
The platform ingests broker submissions, extracts and enriches data, checks it against risk appetite and passes decision-ready risks to underwriting and policy systems. It covers new business, renewals, mid-term adjustments and claims documents. Schemas are defined in natural language, and the vendor states its models handle more than 140 languages.
Applied Systems, based in Chicago, acquired Cytora on September 9, 2025, and Cytora continues to operate under its own name. Customers named on the website include Zurich, Chubb, Markel, Beazley, Travelers and QBE.
Cytora AI features and use cases
- Reads broker submissionsLanguage models pretrained for commercial insurance read submission emails, attachments and schedules of values and extract the fields the insurer defines. Underwriting assistants no longer rekey data from PDFs and spreadsheets, and schemas are set up in natural language without training data.
- Checks appetite and prioritizes risksExtracted risks are enriched with internal and external data and checked against the insurer's appetite. Out-of-appetite risks can be declined automatically, and the rest are ranked, so underwriters spend their time on the submissions they are most likely to write.
- Automates workflows with review rulesAutopilot executes risk processing steps on its own and records each action for audit. Rules based on confidence thresholds send uncertain cases to a person, which keeps humans in control of edge cases while simple risks go straight through.
What sets Cytora apart
- Focused on commercial lines, serving insurers, wholesale brokers and MGAs.
- Business unit of Applied Systems since September 2025, operating under the Cytora name.
Where Cytora is strongest
Cytora is a University of Cambridge spinout based in the UK and names London market insurers such as Beazley and Markel as customers.
Questions to ask before you buy Cytora
Commercial underwriting of companies is not high-risk under Annex III No. 5 of the EU AI Act, which covers life and health insurance pricing for individuals, but auto-decline rules still need documented oversight. Submissions contain broker and client data, so clarify hosting location and subprocessors. A cloud platform is outsourcing under EIOPA guidelines and DORA, and the new ownership may change contract terms.
