What is DeepEval?

DeepEval is an open-source Python framework for unit and regression testing of LLM applications, from chatbots and RAG pipelines to agents, maintained by Confident AI.

DeepEval works like pytest for LLM outputs: test cases run against metrics and fail when scores drop below a threshold. Built-in metrics cover G-Eval, hallucination, answer relevancy, RAG faithfulness and contextual precision, safety metrics such as bias, toxicity and PII leakage, agent metrics and multimodal checks. It also generates synthetic datasets, optimizes prompts and runs standard benchmarks. The Apache 2.0 repository had about 18,500 stars with commits on September 28, 2026. Confident AI sells a hosted platform for tracing and team collaboration on top.

DeepEval AI features and use cases

  • Tests LLM answers in CITest cases with metrics such as answer relevancy or hallucination run in the CI pipeline like unit tests. A change to a prompt or model that lowers quality fails the build.
  • Checks RAG retrieval qualityRAG metrics measure whether retrieved context is relevant and whether answers stay faithful to it. Teams tune chunking and retrieval with measurable results.
  • Evaluates agent behaviorAgent metrics check task completion, tool correctness and plan adherence. Developers see whether an agent picked the right tools on the way to its final answer.

What sets DeepEval apart

  • pytest-style workflow that fits existing software testing practices.
  • Python and TypeScript SDKs, with optional hosted platform from the same maintainer.

Where DeepEval is strongest

Available internationally

DeepEval is an open-source framework used worldwide that runs locally and in any CI pipeline.

Questions to ask before you buy DeepEval

Most metrics use an LLM as judge, which creates API costs and sends test data to the chosen model provider. Pick a judge model that fits your data protection requirements. If you use the Confident AI platform, check data location and terms separately.
