What is DINOv3?

DINOv3 is a technical report from Meta AI Research (FAIR) on vision foundation models trained without labels. The models produce general image features that work for classification, segmentation, depth estimation and domains such as satellite imagery without fine-tuning.

The report scales dataset and model size, introduces Gram anchoring against the degradation of dense feature maps in long training, and applies post-hoc strategies to improve the models further. Backbones range from a distilled ViT-S with 21 million parameters to much larger models, and there are ConvNeXt distillations.

Weights are available after accepting the license through Meta's download page and on the Hugging Face Hub, and are supported in Transformers and timm. Recent additions include a canopy height model from March 2026 and metadata-guided training code from June 2026. The repository had 11,461 stars and its latest push on July 15, 2026.

DINOv3 AI features and use cases

  • Builds vision features without labelsDINOv3 learns image representations from unlabeled pictures. Companies with large image archives but few labels can build search, clustering or classification on top without an expensive annotation project.
  • Supports dense tasks like segmentationThe dense features work with simple linear heads for segmentation and depth estimation, as shown in the released recipes. Quality inspection or mapping teams can start from strong features and train only a small head.
  • Adapts to satellite and microscopy imagesReleased recipes cover satellite imagery and fluorescence microscopy. Organizations working with specialized imagery can reuse the approach for their domain.

What sets DINOv3 apart

  • Trained without labels, which avoids annotation cost at pretraining.
  • Available in Hugging Face Transformers and timm.
  • Weights come under Meta's DINOv3 license after an access request.

Questions to ask before you buy DINOv3

Access to weights requires accepting Meta's DINOv3 license, so have legal review the terms before commercial use. The models are feature extractors: you still need a task head and evaluation on your own images, and large backbones need GPUs.

Questions about DINOv3

How do we get the model weights?

The README asks users to request access through Meta's download page, after which an email with download URLs is sent. Weights are also on the Hugging Face Hub.

Do we need to fine-tune DINOv3?

The report states that the features perform well across many tasks without fine-tuning. For a specific task you typically train a small head on top.

Is the project maintained?

Yes. The latest push was on July 15, 2026, and new training code was added in June 2026.
