What is Label Studio?

Label Studio is an open-source data labeling tool for ML and AI teams that annotate text, images, audio, video and agent traces. HumanSignal, which maintains it, sells cloud and enterprise editions with automation and evaluation features.

The Community Edition is licensed under Apache 2.0 and had about 28,400 GitHub stars with commits on September 28, 2026. Labeling interfaces are configured per project and cover classification, bounding boxes, transcription, ranking and comparison of model outputs. Starter Cloud adds hosting, role-based access and quality workflows for up to 12 users. Enterprise adds SSO via SAML or LDAP, LLM auto-labeling, LLM-as-a-judge evaluation, SOC 2 and HIPAA compliance and optional on-premises deployment.

Label Studio AI features and use cases

  • Pre-labels data with your own modelAn ML backend connects a model that proposes labels as tasks load. Annotators confirm or fix predictions, which cuts repetitive work on large datasets.
  • Compares and ranks model outputsConfigurable interfaces let reviewers rank or compare responses from language models. Teams collect preference data for fine-tuning or check answer quality.
  • Automates evaluation with human oversightIn the Enterprise edition, an LLM judges outputs and people review the results. Evaluation teams scale checks while keeping a person in the loop for doubtful cases.

What sets Label Studio apart

  • Apache 2.0 Community Edition with configurable labeling interfaces for nearly any data type.
  • Covers classic labeling and LLM work such as ranking responses and reviewing agent traces.
