What LegalBench does

LegalBench is an open benchmark for evaluating legal reasoning in English language models. Legal and IT teams use it to see how well a model handles contracts, statutes and court decisions.

  • Tests classification, extraction, generation and entailment on legal text
  • Few-shot training splits per task for prompting experiments

LegalBench is run by the Hazy Research group at Stanford University, and its tasks are based on English-language, mostly US legal material.

Before you switch: All tasks are in English and largely based on US law, so results do not transfer to German or EU law. Check the license of each task you use, since sources differ. Model outputs on legal questions still need review by qualified lawyers.

The 4 closest alternatives in detail

Bright Data

Bright Data sells web data collection at scale: proxy networks, ready-made scraper APIs, a hosted browser for scraping, search result APIs and prepared datasets, used by companies and AI labs.

Key functions

  • AI Scraper Studio generates a scraper API for a target domain
  • Web Scraper API returns parsed JSON or CSV with JavaScript rendering included

Compared with LegalBench

  • Publishes a price (from $1.50 usage-based); LegalBench quotes on request.
  • Names 5 security certificates, LegalBench 0.
  • Strongest elsewhere: Israel.

Check before buying: The tool offers features for bypassing CAPTCHAs and website blocks, such as CAPTCHA solving in the Web Scraper API and Web Unlocker. Using them can breach the target sites' terms of use and is legally risky in Germany, for example under Section 202a of the German Criminal Code (StGB) or database rights. Have their use legally reviewed before deployment, including copyright and data protection. The trust center lists certificates and audit reports, but data storage locations and a DPA link were not public in September 2026; request them. Costs scale with records, requests or traffic, so set spend limits.

Common Corpus

Common Corpus is an open dataset for training language models that contains only public domain or freely licensed text, with license information for every document. It suits teams that need traceable training data.

Key functions

  • Document-level license and provenance metadata for filtering by license
  • OCR correction and toxicity filtering based on Pleias models

Compared with LegalBench

  • Headquartered in France, LegalBench in United States.
  • Strongest elsewhere: France.

Check before buying: Check whether attribution requirements of the individual licenses fit your model documentation; filter out licenses you do not want. Public domain and government documents can still contain personal data, so assess data protection separately. The full corpus is very large, so start with the collections you need.

CUAD

CUAD is an open dataset of commercial contracts labeled by law students under the supervision of experienced lawyers. Legal tech and legal teams use it to train and test contract review models.

Key functions

  • Question-answering format for training and testing clause extraction models
  • Labels for 41 clause types relevant to corporate transactions

Check before buying: The contracts are English-language and follow common-law drafting, so models trained on CUAD need testing on German contracts before use in Germany. Contract review results still need a lawyer's check, and the labels cover 41 clause types, so clauses outside this list need separate testing.

FinanceBench

FinanceBench is a test set for question answering on company financial reports. Finance and data teams use the open sample to check whether a model or RAG setup finds correct figures in filings.

Key functions

  • Questions with answers and evidence strings from financial documents
  • Designed to test retrieval and long-context setups for financial question answering

Check before buying: The open sample is licensed CC BY-NC 4.0, which excludes commercial use; clarify internal use with legal and ask Patronus AI about the full set. With 150 cases the sample is small, so add your own questions on your company's reports. The filings are US company documents in English.
