Independent benchmarking of AI models and API providers on intelligence, speed, latency and price, with image, video and coding arenas.

OpenCompass overview and key facts (October 2026)
Open-source LLM evaluation platform from Shanghai with CompassRank leaderboards, the CompassHub benchmark catalog and VLMEvalKit.
What is OpenCompass?
OpenCompass is an open-source toolkit and leaderboard for evaluating large language and multimodal models. Teams run standardized benchmarks on their own or third-party models and compare results.
OpenCompass 2.0 has three parts: CompassKit, the evaluation toolkit on GitHub; CompassHub, a catalog of benchmarks; and CompassRank, leaderboards covering public and API models. Recent updates added support for the OpenAI Responses API, LiteLLM and updated Gemini and Anthropic SDKs in July 2026, and native multimodal evaluation through VLMEvalKit in August 2026. Model providers can submit a model for evaluation by email. The toolkit is licensed under Apache 2.0.
OpenCompass AI features and use cases
- Evaluates own or fine-tuned modelsTeams can run many public benchmarks on a model they host or fine-tuned themselves with one toolkit. This replaces separate scripts per benchmark and makes results reproducible. Results can be compared with the public leaderboard.
- Compares API modelsThrough the OpenAI Responses API and LiteLLM gateway support, commercial models can be tested with the same setup. Buyers compare vendors on identical tasks. This keeps vendor comparisons fair and repeatable, because every model sees the same prompts and scoring.
- Tests multimodal modelsThe VLMEvalKit integration adds image and document benchmarks such as MMBench and MMMU-Pro. Teams planning document or image processing can check models on those tasks. The official VLMEvalKit metrics are used for scoring.
What sets OpenCompass apart
- Toolkit, benchmark catalog and leaderboard from one project.
- Strong coverage of Chinese-language benchmarks next to English ones.
Where OpenCompass is strongest
OpenCompass is developed by a team reachable via the Shanghai AI Laboratory domain pjlab.org.cn, and its website runs on a .cn domain with a Chinese interface.
Questions to ask before you buy OpenCompass
Running evaluations yourself requires GPU capacity or API budget, depending on the models tested. Version 0.4.0 moved configuration files into the package, so check compatibility of older setups. Parts of the documentation and website are primarily in Chinese. Plan time for this when onboarding.
