Billtrust vs HighRadius (October 2026): accounts receivable automation compared
Updated · 13 min · by Nick Schäfer- Verdict: Billtrust fits B2B suppliers whose main problem is getting invoices into customers' AP portals and collecting payments through many channels. HighRadius fits large finance teams that want one suite with many AI agents and will tie fees to agreed results.
- Where Billtrust leads: Invoice delivery into more than 260 AP portals, a registered Peppol access point in Belgium, hosting for EU and UK customers in Ireland, and a written statement that customer data does not train foundational AI models.
- Where HighRadius leads: A wider suite with 13 named agents for cash application alone, more than 600 customer portals for remittances and claims, data centers in Germany and Ireland, and no fees until go-live.
- The number that decides: Your invoice volume and your short payments. Billtrust bills subscription and per-item fees, while HighRadius bills a share of measured gains, so the cheaper option depends on the baseline you can prove.
- Check before choosing: Fee mechanics in writing, the hosting region, the AI sub-processors at each vendor, and whether the invoice output works for German XRechnung and ZUGFeRD.
Billtrust and HighRadius both automate the path from invoice to cash: delivering invoices, collecting payments, chasing late accounts, matching incoming money to open items and deciding how much credit a customer gets. Both are US companies and both sell mainly to mid-sized and large businesses. Teams compare them when an ERP's receivables module no longer keeps up with invoice volume, customer portals or short payments.
We compared them in October 2026 from vendor product, pricing, trust and sub-processor pages, press releases, Billtrust's last annual report as a listed company (Form 10-K for 2021), German and EU legal texts and independent coverage. ai-toolfinder is independent and earns nothing from either vendor. Both belong to our accounts receivable category, which lists 59 tools today, so this pair is one option among many.
Billtrust or HighRadius: the verdict
Pick Billtrust if you are a mid-sized or large B2B supplier whose customers demand invoices in their own AP portals, and you want invoicing, payments, credit and collections from one vendor with known subscription and per-item fees.
Pick HighRadius if you run a large receivables team or shared service center on SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics or Workday, face many deductions, and accept a fee tied to measured gains.

Pricing and contracts: Billtrust bills subscription and volume, HighRadius bills a share of gains
Neither vendor publishes amounts, so no honest price comparison exists as of October 2026. Billtrust's website names no prices and offers a demo. HighRadius describes outcome-based pricing: $0 in setup fees and $0 in subscription fees until go-live, then a fee that is a percentage of the financial outcomes the customer realizes, measured against Mutually Agreed Success Criteria (MASC).
For Billtrust's contract structure we have one hard source: the last annual report it filed as a listed company, the Form 10-K for 2021, written before EQT bought the company. It says subscription agreements typically have an initial term of 1 to 3 years, are non-cancellable, are invoiced annually in advance and then renew annually. Transaction fees are charged per item, for example per invoice delivered or payment processed, or in basis points on card payments, and are billed monthly. Professional services are typically charged at hourly rates. Terms may have changed since 2022, so ask for the current order form.
HighRadius leaves the important parts open. Its March 23, 2026 blog post on the model names baselines, targets and sign-off metrics, but gives no percentage, no cap, no contract length and no rule for missed targets. Those are the clauses to negotiate. Ask which KPIs trigger fees (days sales outstanding, bad debt, automation rate), who measures them, from which baseline, how long the gain share runs and whether it is capped. A gain share aligns incentives, but it can cost more than a fixed fee if your results improve a lot.
Opaque pricing is normal in this category: 42 of the 59 tools in our receivables category list their price as on request.
Scope: Billtrust centers on invoices and payments, HighRadius covers more of the finance back office
Billtrust sells five modules: invoicing, payments, credit, collections and cash application, plus an eCommerce offer. It names more than 2,600 supplier customers, a network of more than 13 million B2B buyers and more than $1 trillion in annual invoice volume. Invoices reach more than 260 customer AP portals, and more than 200 connectors tie the platform to ERPs, banks and other financial institutions. Billtrust also runs as a payment facilitator, which is why its fees include per-payment items.
HighRadius sells collections, cash application, deductions, credit, electronic invoice presentment and payment (EIPP), B2B payments and receivables analytics, and also payables, treasury and close software. It reports more than 1,500 companies as customers, including more than 200 of the Fortune 1000. It names native two-way connectors to SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics and Workday, and says it connects to more than 100 banks, more than 600 customer portals and several payment processors. The portals serve a different purpose than at Billtrust: HighRadius uses them to collect remittance data and deduction claims, while Billtrust uses its portal connections to deliver invoices.
The practical split is simple. If your biggest customers force you to upload every invoice to their portal, Billtrust's portal delivery is its clearest strength. If short payments from retail or distribution customers consume your analysts, HighRadius has more agents aimed at them. A team that also needs a month-end close tool can see how a close specialist compares in BlackLine vs FloQast, since BlackLine also sells invoice-to-cash.
On analyst standing, HighRadius says it is a three-time Leader in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Invoice-to-Cash Applications, and Billtrust reported being named a Challenger in the 2024 edition. We could not open the Gartner report, so treat both placements as vendor-reported.
AI: both sell agents that are generally available today, HighRadius names more of them
Billtrust lists these as available: Insights360 (payment behavior analysis and cash flow forecasts), Agentic Email (reads, categorizes and summarizes collections emails and drafts replies), Agentic Procedures for collections (segments customers by risk and recommends a cadence) and Agentic Credit Lines, announced on March 3, 2026. Credit Lines scores each buyer on more than 80 data points and produces credit limit recommendations with a rationale that a person reviews.
In July 2026 Billtrust launched an MCP server, built on the Model Context Protocol that lets AI assistants query business data. It gives Claude and Microsoft Copilot read-only access to invoicing, payments, cash application and AR analytics, returns structured answers instead of raw data and logs every query. Billtrust says that actions such as sending collections outreach or applying payments from inside the AI workspace are still to come. We treat those as announced, not available.
HighRadius says its receivables platform has more than 60 AI agents, and its company page counts more than 190 agents across receivables, close, payables and treasury. The product page names a dunning agent, an invoice matching and exception handler, a claim download and validity predictor, worklist prioritization, blocked order review and a credit application agent. Its cash application page lists 13 agents, from email and EDI remittance capture to bank statement extraction and ERP posting, and claims 90 percent or more straight-through posting.
Every accuracy figure here comes from the vendors, for example Billtrust's homepage claim of 95 percent or more accuracy in cash application, and we could not check any of them. Run both tools on a sample of your own remittances and deductions. Decide which agent actions need human approval, such as reminders to strategic customers or small write-offs. Billtrust says its AI recommendations carry a rationale and an audit trail and stay under human review.
Security and hosting: both hold SOC and ISO reports, but only HighRadius names German data centers
Billtrust names annual SOC 1 Type 2 and SOC 2 Type 2 audits by independent auditors, ISO 27001:2022, PCI DSS 4.0.1 at Service Provider Level 1, and certification under the EU-US, UK extension and Swiss-US Data Privacy Framework. HighRadius's trust center lists ISO/IEC 27001:2022, SOC 1 Type 2, SOC 2 Type 2, SOC 3, PCI DSS 4.0.1, TX-RAMP, GDPR and the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, and states a recovery time objective of 4 hours and a recovery point objective of 1 hour. Detailed reports at HighRadius require registration in the trust center.
Billtrust's sub-processor list, last revised July 22, 2025, shows AWS serving US customers from US data centers and EU and UK customers from Ireland. It also lists Microsoft Azure, Snowflake and MongoDB Atlas in the United States and KPN in the Netherlands. HighRadius's list, dated September 21, 2026, names AWS and Microsoft Azure with data centers in the United States and in Europe (Germany and Ireland), and Google Cloud Platform with data centers in the United States, Canada and Europe. Which region holds your data remains a contract matter at both vendors, so get it in writing.
The AI layer adds transfers. Billtrust lists OpenAI in the United States for AI deployment. HighRadius lists Amazon Bedrock, Azure OpenAI Service and Vertex AI through its cloud providers, plus ElevenLabs for voice AI in autonomous collections and Deepgram for speech recognition, both in US data centers. Billtrust states that it never uses customer data to train foundational AI models. We found no equivalent sentence on the HighRadius pages we read, so ask for one.
Under Article 28 GDPR you need a data processing agreement (Auftragsverarbeitungsvertrag). Billtrust publishes a data processing addendum on its site, and HighRadius lists a data processing agreement and a sub-processor list in its trust center. Credit tools can also score people: for companies this is mostly outside personal data law, but sole traders are natural persons. In the SCHUFA case (C-634/21, December 7, 2023) the Court of Justice of the EU held that an automated probability score can itself be an automated individual decision under Article 22(1) GDPR when a third party's decision depends decisively on it. If credit limits for sole traders follow an AI recommendation without real human review, take legal advice.
Germany and Europe: e-invoice formats and the works council matter more than the AI
Neither vendor lists a German office. Billtrust's privacy policy names offices in Belgium, the Netherlands and Poland and a European entity, BTRS Holdings Europe BV in Amsterdam. In October 2021 it bought the Belgian collections vendor iController for $58 million, which then served 566 European customers. At the end of 2021, 35 of its 687 employees worked in Europe, according to the 10-K. HighRadius lists offices in Houston, Paris, London, Amsterdam, Hyderabad and Sydney, and its product pages exist in English, German and French.
German companies have had to be able to receive structured e-invoices under the European standard EN 16931 since January 1, 2025. From January 1, 2027, firms with prior-year turnover above €800,000 must issue them, and from January 1, 2028 all firms must, with exceptions for EDI and for invoices under €250. Accepted formats include XRechnung and ZUGFeRD. HighRadius says it validates invoices against XRechnung and ZUGFeRD, is Peppol certified and connects to more than 30 government portals in more than 50 countries. Billtrust says it has built-in e-invoicing rules for every country and calls itself a registered Peppol Access Point in Belgium. We found no Billtrust page that names XRechnung or ZUGFeRD output. All of this is vendor-stated, so ask for a sample XRechnung file and a test run against your ERP.
A works council (Betriebsrat) has a co-determination right under § 87 Abs. 1 Nr. 6 BetrVG for technical systems that monitor the behavior or performance of employees. Worklist prioritization, collector dashboards and agent-assisted email handling can record what each collector does. Neither vendor sells these as monitoring, but in German practice the question arises as soon as per-user activity is stored. Involve the works council before the pilot, and ask each vendor which usage data it keeps per user.
The EU AI Act also touches the employee side. The Digital Omnibus, in force since July 27, 2026, moved the high-risk obligations for employment-related AI, such as worker monitoring, from August 2, 2026 to December 2, 2027. That gives you time, but not a reason to skip the documentation now.
Weaknesses to weigh, and what switching involves
Billtrust's weak points: it publishes no prices, its European footprint is small next to its US base, we found no named XRechnung or ZUGFeRD output, and part of its AI runs through OpenAI as a US sub-processor. Because it is a payment facilitator, fees depend on the payment mix, so card-heavy customers should model the basis-point cost. By its own account it was a Challenger, not a Leader, in Gartner's 2024 quadrant. EQT has owned it since December 2022, after a $1.7 billion offer announced in September 2022.
HighRadius's weak points are different. You cannot assess its fee mechanics before a sales conversation. The platform is built for large teams and may feel heavy to smaller companies. Voice and speech AI sub-processors sit in US data centers. There is no German office, and detailed security reports sit behind a registration wall. A gain share also depends on baselines that you must be able to prove from your own ERP data. HighRadius raised $300 million in March 2021 at a $3.1 billion valuation, according to TechCrunch.
Neither vendor publishes data export terms or exit help on the pages we reviewed. Before signing, ask what you receive on exit (open items, payment history, customer contacts, dunning history, credit decisions), in which format and how fast. Check the connector for your exact ERP version, because Billtrust names more than 200 connectors without itemizing them on the pages we read, while HighRadius names five native ERPs and more than 50 pre-built ERP integrations overall.
Who should pick Billtrust and who HighRadius
- Your largest customers require invoice uploads to their own AP portals, and you want invoicing, payments and collections from one vendor.
- You are a mid-sized B2B supplier in the United States, Belgium, the Netherlands or Poland, where Billtrust has operations, and EU hosting in Ireland is enough.
- You want read-only answers about receivables from Claude or Microsoft Copilot through the MCP server.
- You prefer known subscription and per-item fees over a gain share.
- You want a written statement that customer data does not train foundational AI models.
- Short payments and deductions from retail or distribution customers consume your analysts.
- You run a large receivables team or shared service center on SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics or Workday and may add payables, treasury or close software later.
- You need data hosted in Germany or Ireland and want the regions named in the sub-processor list.
- You prefer to pay nothing before go-live and can define and measure KPIs for a gain share.
- You invoice in many countries and want a vendor that names XRechnung, ZUGFeRD and Peppol.
Billtrust vs HighRadius: frequently asked questions
How much do Billtrust and HighRadius cost?
Neither publishes amounts. Billtrust's 2021 annual report describes subscriptions with 1 to 3 year initial terms plus per-item fees. HighRadius describes no setup and subscription fees until go-live, followed by a gain share tied to agreed success criteria. Get both offers in writing for the same invoice volume.
Which has better AI, Billtrust or HighRadius?
HighRadius names more agents, with more than 60 for receivables and 13 for cash application. Billtrust offers fewer but documented tools: Insights360, Agentic Email, Agentic Credit Lines and a read-only MCP server for Claude and Microsoft Copilot. Neither publishes verified accuracy rates, so test both on your own data.
Can I keep my data in the EU?
Possibly, but confirm it by contract. Billtrust lists Ireland for EU and UK customers on AWS. HighRadius lists data centers in Germany and Ireland at AWS and Azure. Both also use US sub-processors for parts of their AI features, so ask for the processing locations of each function.
Do they support German e-invoicing?
HighRadius says it validates XRechnung and ZUGFeRD and is Peppol certified. Billtrust says it follows e-invoicing rules in every country and is a Peppol access point in Belgium, but we found no page naming XRechnung or ZUGFeRD. Request a sample file and test it with your ERP before January 1, 2027.
The bottom line
Start from where cash gets stuck. If invoices sit unseen in customer portals and payments arrive through many channels, test Billtrust first. If deductions, credit decisions and unapplied cash dominate and you can define KPIs for a gain share, test HighRadius first. Either way, get the fee mechanics, the hosting region, the AI sub-processors and German e-invoice output in writing, and bring the works council in before the pilot starts. How we check pages like this is explained in how we review.
