BlackLine vs FloQast (October 2026): an independent comparison for controllers

Updated · 10 min · by
Key takeaways
  • Verdict: BlackLine fits large, multi-entity and SAP-based groups that also want receivables on the same platform. FloQast fits mid-sized and growing accounting teams that want close, audit testing and self-built agents in one tool.
  • Where BlackLine leads: Verity Prepare, generally available since July 2026, plus intercompany, invoice-to-cash and an SAP resale channel in place since 2018.
  • Where FloQast leads: A Risk & Compliance package next to the close, a no-code agent builder and pricing that ignores seat counts.
  • The number that decides: BlackLine reported 4,394 customers at the end of 2025. FloQast says it serves more than 3,500 accounting teams.
  • Check before choosing: Your ERP, whether you need receivables, which SOC reports your auditors want, and where each vendor hosts your data.

BlackLine and FloQast both sell software for the month-end close: checklists, account reconciliations, journal entries and review. They started in different places. BlackLine grew with large corporate controllers and now spans close, intercompany accounting and invoice-to-cash. FloQast was founded in 2013 by a former auditor and says 80 percent of its front-line staff are former accountants.

We compared them in October 2026 from vendor pricing, product and trust pages, press releases, BlackLine's 2025 annual report (Form 10-K) and trade press. Where only a third party gave a number, we say so. ai-toolfinder is independent and earns nothing from either vendor. Both belong to our financial close category, and both are among the 4 close tools we list with an ISO/IEC 42001 certificate, the standard for managing AI.

BlackLine or FloQast: the verdict

BlackLine

Pick BlackLine if you run a large or SAP-based group and need intercompany and receivables on one platform. It also offers ready-made agents such as Verity Prepare for reconciliations.

FloQast

Pick FloQast if your ERP is NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Workday or Xero and your team is lean. It adds audit and SOX testing next to the close and lets you build your own agents without code.

Scope: BlackLine covers the whole finance cycle, FloQast stays with the accounting team

BlackLine sells three groups of products. Financial Close and Consolidation holds account reconciliations, transaction matching, journal entries, task management, compliance and consolidation. Intercompany handles creating, balancing and netting transactions between entities. Invoice-to-Cash covers e-invoicing, cash application, collections, credit risk and disputes.

FloQast presents its offer as Close Management, Close AI and Risk & Compliance. Close Management bundles the checklist and reconciliations, Close AI adds agents, matching and variance analysis, and Risk & Compliance covers controls and audit work. Older FloQast material described six packages. The pricing page we read in October 2026 shows three.

The practical difference is where the tool stops. If your controller wants one vendor from the ledger close through cash collection, BlackLine is the only one of the two that has a receivables suite. For teams that already run collections elsewhere, see our accounts receivable category before paying for a module you will not use.

BlackLine's 2025 annual report says the company had about 1,850 employees. That size matters for support and roadmap, but it also means BlackLine sells into complex estates. A team of four accountants may find the breadth more than it needs.

AI: Verity Prepare is generally available, FloQast leans on agents you build

BlackLine's Verity suite launched in September 2025. Verity Prepare, a multi-agent system that reads supporting documents, isolates anomalies, writes variance explanations and assembles a reconciliation package for human sign-off, became generally available on July 27, 2026. BlackLine says early adopters cut manual preparation time by up to 92 percent. That figure comes from the vendor and from its early adopter program.

Other Verity components named by BlackLine include Accruals, Match, Flux, Collect and Remit. Accruals drafts accruals and journal entries for approval, Flux explains variances, Collect places and logs customer calls, and Remit reads remittance data. On December 15, 2025, BlackLine also acquired WiseLayer, a company building agents for judgment-based finance work. We found no statement on when those agents ship, so we do not count them.

FloQast describes AI Matching, AI Variance Analysis, Detect for monitoring ledger transactions and a Journal Entry Agent that builds entries from Coupa data, announced in March 2025. In September 2025 it announced the AI Agent Builder inside FloQast Transform, where accountants describe a task in plain language and review the result. The release did not say which items were generally available at launch, so ask for status in the demo.

FloQast says nothing posts to the books without human approval and ties its AI governance to the COSO framework, a widely used internal control model. BlackLine also stresses human sign-off, confidence scoring and an audit trail for Verity Prepare.

The trade-off is control against effort. Prebuilt agents work on standard steps from day one. A builder lets a team automate its own odd routines, but someone has to design, test and document every agent so that auditors can follow it. Neither vendor publishes error rates, so ask each for a pilot on your own accounts.

Audit evidence and SOX: FloQast builds testing in, BlackLine hands over the broader reports

For a company reporting under Section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act in the United States, the close tool is part of the control environment. FloQast's Risk & Compliance package aims at control design, testing and remediation in one place. Press coverage names the earlier tiers Connected Compliance for SOX 404a work and Compliance Pro for 404b testing, so confirm today's naming in a demo.

BlackLine lists compliance among its close products. Its security pages describe SOC 1 Type 2 and SOC 2 Type 2 attestations plus ISO/IEC 27001, 27017, 27018 and 27701 certificates. It announced ISO/IEC 42001 in September 2025. FloQast lists ISO 27001, ISO 27701, ISO 42001, SOC 2 and SOC 3, and says it offers bridge letters that cover the gap between a report's end date and today.

The gap to check is SOC 1. Auditors usually ask for a SOC 1 report when a vendor's system touches financial reporting controls, while SOC 2 covers security and related criteria. In what we could read, FloQast's trust page names SOC 2 and SOC 3 and speaks of SOC reporting in general. Ask FloQast whether a SOC 1 report exists and what it covers before your auditors ask.

Our audit and internal controls category lists tools that focus on control testing alone. Teams that already run a dedicated tool there can compare it with FloQast's package. FloQast shares audit reports with customers in its application and with prospects through the account executive, so request current reports during procurement.

ERP fit: SAP and Oracle estates lean to BlackLine, cloud mid-market ledgers to FloQast

BlackLine's annual report names SAP, Oracle, Workday, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Sage Intacct and NetSuite among its supported systems. SAP has resold BlackLine since 2018 through its SolEx channel and BlackLine receives a percentage of the revenue. A dedicated Smart Close for SAP product embeds close tasks in the SAP interface. Buyers who already contract with SAP may find that a simpler procurement route.

FloQast lists Workday, Oracle NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Yardi, Sage Intacct, Xero and Intuit QuickBooks on its homepage, and Microsoft and AWS on its pricing page. In September 2025 it added a Workday general ledger integration. The mix points toward cloud ledgers and mid-sized finance teams. Third-party analysis on Coefficient reaches the same reading, though that is opinion and not a test.

Both lists describe supported systems, not guaranteed depth. The same ERP can be connected through a standard connector in one case and a custom file feed in another. Ask each vendor to name the connector, the refresh frequency and the number of customers live on your ERP version.

The same applies to migration. Moving between the two means rebuilding checklists, reconciliation templates and account ownership, and keeping prior period evidence for auditors. Neither vendor publishes a migration guide or a timeline. A third-party source cites 4.5 to 5.2 months of average implementation for BlackLine and 1.3 to 1.7 months for FloQast. Treat that as an unverified benchmark.

Pricing and contracts: both quote on request, neither bills by seat

Neither vendor publishes a price in October 2026. FloQast's pricing page describes packages built around value and says they scale with business outcomes, not seat count. BlackLine's 2025 annual report says it is moving to platform pricing. The price is no longer tied to the number of users and depends on the size and complexity of the customer.

BlackLine's report states that initial subscription terms are typically one to three years and that agreements usually renew automatically. FloQast does not publish term length, renewal rules or a free trial. Ask both for the renewal uplift, the notice period and what happens to your data on exit.

Independent price points are thin. Coefficient, citing Vendr transaction data, puts BlackLine's average annual contract at $77,000 and FloQast's median at about $24,000. These are third-party estimates of past deals, not list prices, and scope differs. FloQast has no receivables suite, so compare quotes for the same scope.

Company stability differs. BlackLine is listed on Nasdaq and publishes audited results. FloQast is private and raised $100 million in April 2024 at a post-money valuation of $1.6 billion, led by ICONIQ Growth. For procurement teams, a listed company offers financial statements, while a private one means asking for references and the funding situation.

Markets and data: US, UK and DACH look different

Both companies are headquartered in the United States. FloQast lists offices in Los Angeles, San Jose, New York, Chicago, Austin, London, Berlin, Sydney and Pune. BlackLine's 2025 annual report names offices in Australia, England, India, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Romania and the United States.

In the United Kingdom, listed companies face the 2024 UK Corporate Governance Code. Provision 29 applies to financial years starting on or after January 1, 2026 and requires boards to declare whether material controls worked at year end. Close evidence, reconciliation sign-off and control testing become inputs to that declaration. Both vendors have a UK presence, FloQast through a London office and BlackLine through England.

For Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the picture is mixed. FloQast announced its DACH expansion with the 2024 funding round and lists a Berlin office. BlackLine's report lists no German office. Check German-language support, local ledger practice and whether the tool helps you keep records as the German GoBD rules for electronic bookkeeping require, with immutable entries and a procedure documentation.

Data location is the open point. We found no statement of hosting regions on the pages we could read for either vendor. BlackLine offers a Data Processing Agreement, subprocessor information and a transfer impact assessment, according to its privacy materials. FloQast lists Data Privacy Framework compliance and ISO 27701. Request the hosting region, the subprocessor list and a data processing agreement under Article 28 GDPR before signing.

A works council in Germany has a say under section 87(1) no. 6 of the Works Constitution Act when a company introduces technical systems designed to monitor employee behavior or performance. Close tools log who completed which task and when. Plan for that, and for the EU AI Act: a provisional agreement in the Digital Omnibus would move high-risk obligations to December 2, 2027, but check formal adoption. We found no sign that close agents fall into the high-risk list, but ask each vendor for its own classification.

Who should pick BlackLine and who FloQast

Pick BlackLine if
  • You run a large or multi-entity group, or an SAP estate, and may buy through SAP.
  • You want receivables, collections and cash application on the same platform as the close.
  • You want generally available agents for reconciliation preparation and accruals now.
  • Your auditors expect a vendor SOC 1 Type 2 report, which BlackLine says it holds.
  • You prefer a Nasdaq-listed vendor with audited annual figures.
Pick FloQast if
  • Your ERP is NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Workday or Xero.
  • You want SOX or operational audit testing in the same tool as the close.
  • You want to build your own agents in plain language and review each result.
  • You expect your accounting headcount to grow and want no per-user fees.
  • You want a vendor with offices in London and Berlin.

BlackLine vs FloQast: frequently asked questions

Is FloQast cheaper than BlackLine?

Neither publishes prices, so no official comparison exists. Both quote by scope and not by user. Third-party Vendr data cited by Coefficient suggests lower typical FloQast contracts, but scope differs, since FloQast has no receivables suite. Compare quotes for the same functions.

Which has better AI, BlackLine or FloQast?

BlackLine has more prebuilt agents, led by Verity Prepare for reconciliations, generally available since July 2026. FloQast has matching, variance and journal entry agents plus an agent builder. Test both on your own accounts, because neither publishes accuracy rates.

Does FloQast support SOX compliance work?

Yes. Its Risk & Compliance package covers controls, testing and audit readiness, and press coverage names SOX 404a and 404b tiers. BlackLine also lists compliance among its close products, but we found no separate testing package.

Can European teams use BlackLine or FloQast?

Yes, with checks. FloQast has offices in London and Berlin, BlackLine one in England. Neither page we read names hosting regions. Ask for the region, a data processing agreement, subprocessors and GoBD fit, and involve the works council early.

The bottom line

Let scope and ERP decide. If receivables, intercompany or SAP are part of the plan, or you want the widest set of generally available agents, BlackLine is the stronger fit. If your team is lean, runs a mid-market cloud ledger and has to test controls next to the close, FloQast covers more of that job. Before signing either one, ask for the current SOC reports, the hosting region and a written scope. Our comparisons BlackLine vs Trintech and FloQast vs Trintech show a third option.
