BlackLine vs Trintech (October 2026): an independent comparison for controllers
Updated · 12 min · by Nick Schäfer- Verdict: BlackLine fits large, multi-entity and SAP-based groups that want close, intercompany and receivables on one platform. Trintech fits companies that want a product sized to them: Cadency for enterprises, Adra for the mid-market, ReconNET and Frontier for bank-scale matching.
- Where BlackLine leads: A wider catalog of AI agents, with Verity Prepare generally available since July 27, 2026, plus intercompany, invoice-to-cash and an SAP resale channel.
- Where Trintech leads: Separate products for mid-sized firms and for high-volume matching, a published data protection addendum with named hosting providers, and TX-RAMP for Texas public bodies.
- The number that decides: BlackLine's customer count fell from 4,451 to 4,260 between June 2025 and June 2026, while revenue grew 9 percent in the second quarter of 2026. Trintech is private and was reported in 2024 to serve about 4,200 organizations.
- Check before choosing: Which agents your license includes, which hosting instance holds your data, whether the vendor's SOC 1 report covers your modules, and what you can export when you leave.
BlackLine and Trintech are the two best-known names in record-to-report software: account reconciliations, transaction matching, close task lists and journal entries. Both are American, both quote prices only on request, and both have shipped AI agents into the monthly close during 2026. Controllers often meet them side by side in the same shortlist, and our BlackLine vs FloQast and FloQast vs Trintech pages cover the other pairings.
We compared them in October 2026 from vendor product, trust and legal pages, press releases, BlackLine's SEC filings (the 2025 Form 10-K and the second-quarter 2026 Form 10-Q), Trintech's published contract documents and trade press. Where only the vendor gave a number, we say so. ai-toolfinder is independent and earns nothing from either vendor (how we review). Both belong to our financial close category, where 64 of 76 tools publish no price.
BlackLine or Trintech: the verdict
Pick BlackLine if you run a large group or an SAP environment, want reconciliation preparation, accruals and receivables handled by agents from one vendor, and can accept a platform price negotiated by size and complexity.
Pick Trintech if you are a mid-sized company that wants a lighter product (Adra), a bank or insurer with very high matching volumes, or an organization that wants hosting providers and sub-processors named in a public contract document.

Scope: one platform against a family of products
BlackLine presents one platform, Studio360, with three product groups. Financial Close and Consolidation holds account reconciliations, transaction matching, journal entries, account analysis, task management, compliance and consolidation. Intercompany covers creating, balancing, netting and settling transactions between group entities. Invoice-to-Cash covers e-invoicing, cash application, collections, credit and risk management, and disputes. For SAP users there is a module called Smart Close for SAP.
Trintech splits the work across products. Cadency manages the close for large enterprises. Adra, bought in November 2017 from an Oslo company that then had more than 1,400 customers, targets the mid-enterprise with matching, reconciliations and journal entries. ReconNET, Frontier and Accurate handle high-volume transaction matching. Frontier and Accurate came from Fiserv in July 2023 and were used by more than 400 clients at the time, including eight of the ten largest US banks, according to investor Summit Partners.
The split has a cost in complexity. Moving from Adra to Cadency later is a product change, not a plan upgrade, and you should ask for both quotes up front. The benefit is that a 300-person company does not have to buy a suite built for a global group.
BlackLine now also owns the upstream credit step. On September 21, 2026 it announced the acquisition of NetNow, a customer onboarding and credit risk tool. Terms were not disclosed and no availability date was stated, so we do not count it as a product you can buy today. If receivables sit outside your close project, our accounts receivable category shows the alternatives.
AI today: BlackLine lists more agents, Trintech has just filled in its set
BlackLine's Verity page lists agents for accruals, reconciliation preparation, matching, collections, remittance extraction, cash forecasting, insights, variance analysis, narratives, document summaries and a help assistant. Only Verity Prepare carries a dated general availability notice: July 27, 2026. It prepares whole reconciliations, retrieves supporting documents, drafts reconciling items and hands the package to a person for approval. BlackLine says early adopters cut manual preparation time by up to 92 percent. For Verity Accruals it claims up to 80 percent less manual work and a close 3 days faster. Both are vendor figures, not independent tests.
Trintech has moved quickly this year. Its Beacon assistant, described on April 9, 2026, suggests journal entries with risk scoring, generates match rules and writes reconciliation narratives. The Flux Agent and the Variance Analysis Agent followed on June 25, 2026. On September 28, 2026, three days before this review, Trintech announced the Data Access Agent, the Accruals Intelligence Agent and the Exception Management Agent. Customers are told to contact their account manager, so check which agents are actually switched on in your contract. Trintech's homepage claims auto-match rates above 99 percent, again a vendor figure.
On data use both make firm promises. BlackLine says it never uses customer data from generative AI tasks to train generalized models, trains predictive models only with explicit permission, and keeps data within its region. Trintech's trust center says customer data is never used to train general-purpose AI models and describes monthly model monitoring and audit trails.
Neither vendor publishes error rates. Prepare, Flux and Exception Management all end in a human review step, which is the right design for ledgers, but the quality of the first draft decides how much time you save. Ask both for a pilot on your own noisy accounts.
Pricing and contracts: both quote, only BlackLine's pricing logic is on record
Neither vendor publishes a price in October 2026. BlackLine's 2025 annual report says it moved to platform pricing that is no longer tied to the number of users and depends on the size and complexity of the customer. In its second-quarter 2026 filing, platform pricing accounted for 17 percent of eligible annual recurring revenue, up from 11 percent at the end of 2025. Ask how Verity agents are licensed, since they were released one after another.
BlackLine's annual report says the initial subscription period for most customers is one to three years and that agreements typically renew automatically. Plan the cancellation notice date in your calendar on day one. Trintech publishes no price, no pricing model and no standard term. Its public legacy Subscription Services Agreement (March 2023 version) defers the term to the order form.
Trintech's legacy Support Addendum (June 2024 version, marked as valid through 2025) promises 99.9 percent monthly availability, with service credits of 3, 5 or 10 percent of monthly fees if availability falls below that, requested within ten days. Its security addendum promises notice of a breach within 48 hours. These are older documents for Cadency, and current contracts may differ. We found no comparable public BlackLine service terms.
We did not use third-party price estimates for this page. Review sites quote averages, but the scopes differ too much to compare, and neither vendor confirms them. Get quotes for the same scope: the products you would actually run, the entities, the number of reconciliations and the agents.
Momentum and ownership: BlackLine's customer count is falling as it moves upmarket, Trintech's owners have explored a sale
BlackLine reported 4,451 customers on June 30, 2025, 4,394 at the end of 2025 and 4,260 on June 30, 2026. In the same filing it says its sharper focus on enterprise and large mid-market customers has increased churn among smaller customers, and that the move to platform pricing may raise user attrition. Revenue still grew: $700.4 million in 2025 (up 7 percent) and $187.8 million in the second quarter of 2026 (up 9 percent). Dollar-based net revenue retention was 102 percent in June 2026.
For a small or mid-sized buyer this is a signal worth weighing. A vendor that is deliberately moving upmarket may price and support a 200-person company as a secondary segment. For a large group the same data reads as a vendor concentrating on its core.
Trintech is private. Summit Partners took a majority stake in January 2018, with Vista Equity Partners and management keeping minority stakes. In August 2024 Reuters reported that the owners were exploring a sale that could value Trintech at about $2 billion including debt, with roughly $200 million in revenue and about 4,200 organizations as customers. We found no announced sale as of October 2026. Ownership changes can bring pricing, roadmap and support changes, so ask each vendor for its reference customers of the last two years and read the change-of-control clauses.
Neither number proves better software. Customer counts depend on definitions: BlackLine counts entities with an active subscription and excludes on-premise software, and Trintech's 4,200 comes from a 2023 Summit Partners release and a 2024 Reuters report, not from its own site.
Data, audit reports and compliance: both strong on paper, different amounts of detail
BlackLine's security page lists ISO/IEC 27001, 27017, 27018, 27701 and 42001 (for AI providers and users), plus SOC 1 Type 2, SOC 2 Type 2 and SOC 3. Its sub-processor page, effective July 1, 2026, names the hosting regions per product. BlackLine Financial Close in the EU runs on instances in Amsterdam (Verizon, with Frankfurt on AWS as backup), Frankfurt (Google Cloud, with St. Ghislain in Belgium as backup) and Snowflake in Frankfurt and the Netherlands. Customer data is stored in the region you request at sign-up. Invoice-to-Cash and Intercompany list their own EU locations, including Dublin, so confirm the instance for each module you buy.
Trintech's trust center lists ISO/IEC 27001:2022, SOC 1 Type 2, SOC 2 Type 2 with monthly bridge letters, CSA STAR and TX-RAMP Level 2 for Cadency and ReconNET. It names no hosting regions. The Cadency data protection addendum does: infrastructure providers are Dell, Faction and Rackspace in the US, the UK, Germany and Australia, and personal data is processed in the EEA, the UK and the US. The addendum applies Standard Contractual Clauses to third-country transfers and gives customers 15 days to object to a new sub-processor. A 2023 security addendum limited ISO 27001 to Cadency, so ask whether it now covers Adra and ReconNET.
For audit use, the SOC 1 report is the one that matters, because it speaks to controls over financial reporting. Both vendors list it. Request the latest report for the exact modules you plan to use and check that the period reaches close to today.
On the EU AI Act, reconciliation, matching and accrual agents do not appear in the Annex III list of high-risk uses. Credit scoring of natural persons does, which is why BlackLine's NetNow credit tools deserve a legal check if you assess sole traders. Under German law, any tool that logs who prepared or approved which task can fall under § 87 Abs. 1 Nr. 6 BetrVG, which gives works councils a say over technical devices that can monitor behavior or performance. Agree a works agreement before go-live if you have a council.
Fit by size and country: ERP, support and moving between them
BlackLine's annual report names Workday, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Sage Intacct and NetSuite as ERP systems its platform integrates with, and it connects to banks, point-of-sale, treasury, payroll and procurement systems. SAP resells BlackLine as SAP SolEx and BlackLine receives a share of the revenue. Trintech names Microsoft Dynamics, NetSuite, Oracle, SAP, Workday, Planful and ServiceNow. Both lists show supported systems, not depth. Ask for the connector name, the refresh frequency and a reference customer on your ERP version.
In the US, both fit companies that must document close controls under Sarbanes-Oxley. For Texas state agencies, Trintech's TX-RAMP Level 2 status for Cadency and ReconNET is a concrete advantage. In the UK, Trintech lists a London office and BlackLine lists the United Kingdom among its offices. In DACH, Trintech lists an office in Frankfurt am Main. BlackLine's contact page lists Germany too, and its annual report names Germany among the countries where it has offices or staff. Among the 76 close tools in our directory, only 3 count Germany among their strongest markets, so local presence by either US vendor is a real differentiator.
Neither vendor publishes a migration guide. Trintech's legacy agreement says it will provide a copy of your data in an electronically readable format within 30 days of a written request after termination, and that it has no duty to keep the data afterwards. We found no equivalent public BlackLine clause. In both cases, rebuild checklists, reconciliation templates and account ownership, and archive prior-period evidence for your auditors before you cancel.
German buyers should also check receivables. BlackLine sells e-invoicing inside Invoice-to-Cash. Since January 1, 2025 every German business must be able to receive structured e-invoices, and issuing is mandatory from 2027 for companies above €800,000 in prior-year revenue and from 2028 for the rest, so a receivables module should speak XRechnung or ZUGFeRD.
Who should pick BlackLine and who Trintech
- Your group runs SAP and wants to buy close software through the SAP channel.
- You want agents that prepare whole reconciliations and draft accruals, and you want a dated general availability notice for that agent.
- You want receivables, collections and cash application on the same platform as the close.
- You need an ISO/IEC 42001 certificate for the vendor's AI management.
- You are a large enterprise and are comfortable with platform pricing and a multi-year initial term.
- You are a mid-sized company and want a product sized for you (Adra) rather than a group-wide platform.
- You are a bank, insurer or credit union with very high matching volumes (ReconNET, Frontier, Accurate).
- You need TX-RAMP Level 2 for work with Texas state agencies.
- You want hosting providers, sub-processors and transfer terms named in a public data protection addendum.
- Your priority is agents that explain variances and sort matching exceptions, and you accept that the newest ones launched only days ago.
BlackLine vs Trintech: frequently asked questions
Is BlackLine more expensive than Trintech?
Neither publishes prices, so no fair comparison exists. BlackLine says its platform price depends on customer size and complexity, not on users. Trintech sells separate products, so the total depends on whether you buy Adra or Cadency. Compare quotes for the same scope.
Which has more AI, BlackLine or Trintech?
BlackLine lists more agents, and Verity Prepare has been generally available since July 27, 2026. Trintech has five named agents plus the Beacon assistant, three of them announced on September 28, 2026. Count only what your contract switches on.
Do BlackLine and Trintech work with SAP?
Yes. BlackLine integrates with SAP, offers Smart Close for SAP and is resold by SAP as SAP SolEx. Trintech names SAP among its integrations, alongside Oracle, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics and Workday.
Can I keep my data in the EU with either vendor?
BlackLine's sub-processor page lists EU instances in Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Belgium, and data is stored in the region you choose at sign-up. Trintech's Cadency addendum names providers in Germany, the UK and the US and processing in the EEA, the UK and the US. Ask Trintech in writing which region holds your data.
The bottom line
Decide on scope first. If you want one vendor for close, intercompany and receivables, with the longest list of agents and an SAP route, shortlist BlackLine and negotiate the platform price and the renewal date. If you want software sized to a mid-sized company or built for bank-scale matching, ask Trintech for the Adra or ReconNET quote and compare that, not Cadency, with BlackLine. In either case request the SOC 1 report, the hosting instance and the exit terms in writing before you sign.
