What is Blue J?
Blue J is an AI tax research tool for accountants and tax professionals. It answers tax questions in plain language with verifiable citations, drafts client-ready text and works with uploaded files, covering US, Canadian and UK tax law.
Blue J targets tax work in accounting firms, from sole practitioners to national CPA firms, and states that more than 6,000 firms use it. The platform draws on primary authoritative sources, Tax Notes and IBFD content, updates its database daily and supports advisory, compliance, tax writing and training work. It covers US federal and state and local tax, Canada and the United Kingdom. The company has offices in New York and Toronto and does not train its own generative models; it uses models from OpenAI and Google under agreements that bar training on Blue J data.
Blue J AI features and use cases
- Answers tax questions with citationsUsers ask tax questions in natural language and Blue J returns an answer grounded in primary law, Tax Notes and IBFD, with in-line citations and a source list. Tax staff get a defensible starting point in seconds and can check each source before relying on it.
- Drafts client-ready textBlue J turns research into drafts such as memos or client emails, which can be exported as PDF or DOCX. Preparers spend less time rewriting research notes into language a client or partner can review, while the citations stay attached.
- Works with uploaded documentsUsers can upload files and ask questions about them within the same conversation, with unlimited uploads in both plans. This helps when a tax question depends on a contract, a notice or a return rather than on the law alone.
- Supports training of junior staffBlue J positions the tool for training as well as advisory and compliance work, and the Team plan adds firm-wide usage insights. Firms can see how the research tool is used across staff and help newer colleagues work through questions faster.
What sets Blue J apart
- Publishes a list price of $1,498 per user per year for the Individual plan and offers a seven-day trial without a credit card.
- Grounds answers in licensed content from Tax Notes and IBFD in addition to primary sources, and updates its database daily.
- Hosts all data in the AWS us-east-1 region with no other region or on-premise option, according to its security page.
Where Blue J is strongest
Blue J has offices in New York and Toronto and covers US federal and state tax law as well as Canadian tax law; the vendor says more than 6,000 firms use the platform.
Questions to ask before you buy Blue J
Check that the jurisdictions you advise on are covered, since Blue J focuses on US, Canadian and UK tax law. All data is stored and processed in the AWS us-east-1 region, and the security page lists only US-based subprocessors. Firms handling EU client data should review the transfer basis; a customer DPA was not available when we checked in September 2026. SSO and custom access controls come only with the Team plan. The SOC 2 Type 2 report is shared under an NDA.
