CoCounsel Legal is Thomson Reuters' AI assistant for lawyers that combines legal research, document analysis and drafting in one workflow, grounded in Westlaw and Practical Law content. It serves law firms, corporate legal departments and government legal teams.

CoCounsel Legal reasons from Westlaw, Practical Law and an organization's own documents. The complete package includes Westlaw Advantage, Practical Law Dynamic Tool Set and CoCounsel Essentials. Features include Deep Research, Westlaw Brief Builder, Tabular Analysis and drafting in Microsoft Word, with connections to Outlook, Teams, iManage, NetDocuments and SharePoint.

Thomson Reuters, listed in Toronto and on Nasdaq, launched the product on August 5, 2025, and released the next generation in the US on August 20, 2026. A UK version followed in January 2026. Online pricing targets firms with up to 10 attorneys; larger firms and legal departments buy through sales.

• Researches legal questions in depthDeep Research plans and runs multi-step research grounded in Westlaw and Practical Law and returns a report with citations. Deep Research Verify then checks whether the cited authority supports each assertion and flags possible misattributions, which shortens the checking step for associates.
• Builds first-draft briefsWestlaw Brief Builder takes litigators from issue framing to argument structure and a first-draft brief in one workflow. Litigation teams under deadline start from a structured draft rather than a blank document.
• Reviews large document setsTabular Analysis checks up to 10,000 documents against 100 questions and shows the results in one table that can be filtered and sorted. Every answer links back to its source document, which helps with due diligence and discovery review.
• Drafts documents in WordThe Drafting Agent in CoCounsel for Word drafts, revises and formats documents directly in Microsoft Word. Lawyers keep working in their usual editor and do not have to copy text between tools.

• Answers draw on Thomson Reuters editorial content from Westlaw and Practical Law, and each reasoning step links to its sources.
• The product page lists SOC 2 and ISO 42001 certification and states that customer data is never used to train the underlying models.
• Sold as a bundle with Westlaw Advantage, Practical Law Dynamic Tool Set and CoCounsel Essentials rather than as a standalone chat tool.

Thomson Reuters states that the majority of top US courts and Am Law 100 firms use CoCounsel. The next generation of CoCounsel Legal launched first in the US in August 2026.

CoCounsel Legal comes bundled with Westlaw Advantage and Practical Law, so compare it with your existing research subscriptions. Online prices apply only to law firms with up to 10 attorneys. Content coverage depends on the jurisdiction: US and UK versions exist, and the next-generation experience was US only in September 2026.
