What is Definely?

Definely is a suite of Microsoft Word add-ins for lawyers who draft and review complex contracts. It links definitions and cross-references, automates proofreading checks and uses AI to analyze contracts, trace the impact of changes and find precedent clauses.

The suite has five products that all run inside Word. Read turns defined terms and cross-references into links and produces definitions reports. Proof runs automated checks for placeholders, formatting and capitalization and can replace confidential details before sharing. Cascade, Enhance and Vault add AI analysis, an assistant and precedent search connected to the document management system.

Definely was founded by Feargus MacDaeid and Nnamdi Emelifeonwu, two former Magic Circle lawyers, and is based in London. The company has raised a $30 million Series B and reports more than 150 customers, including Dentons, A&O Shearman, DLA Piper and KPMG. It suits law firms and legal departments that handle long, heavily cross-referenced agreements.

Definely AI features and use cases

  • Answers questions about complex contractsEnhance is an AI assistant in Word that analyzes and interprets contracts on request. Each answer points to the exact clauses and definitions it relies on, so lawyers can check the source quickly instead of scrolling through long documents.
  • Traces the impact of changesCascade uses AI to show which clauses, definitions and references may be affected by an edit or a counterparty markup. Reviewers can inspect the reasoning and amend related provisions, which lowers the risk of inconsistencies during negotiation.
  • Finds precedent clausesVault connects to the document management system and searches clause libraries for provisions similar in meaning, sorted by relevance. It shows a redline against the current draft and inserts the clause together with its definitions and updated cross-references.

What sets Definely apart

  • All five products work inside Microsoft Word, and deployment can be packaged centrally, for example through Microsoft Intune, according to a customer quote.
  • Built for long, heavily defined agreements, with definitions reports that list defined, undefined and unused terms.
  • The product grew out of an accessibility tool for a co-founder who is registered blind.
