What is Featurespace?

Featurespace sells real-time transaction monitoring that scores payments and account events for fraud and financial crime risk. It is built for banks, payment processors, acquirers and insurers, and has been owned by Visa since December 2024.

The Featurespace Platform combines risk scoring, fraud detection, account takeover prevention and multi-tenancy controls for financial institutions. It can run on premises or as a fully hosted cloud service. The company started as a University of Cambridge spinout and is based in Cambridge, UK.

Visa completed the acquisition on December 19, 2024, and said it would fold Featurespace products into its own fraud and risk-scoring portfolio. Visa names HSBC, NatWest, TSYS, Worldpay, Danske Bank, Akbank and Edenred as customers.

Featurespace AI features and use cases

  • Profiles each customer's normal behaviorAdaptive Behavioral Analytics builds a behavioral profile for each customer from transaction and account events and updates it in real time. When a payment departs from that pattern, the platform raises its risk score, so fraud analysts see unusual activity before money leaves the account.
  • Scores events for fraud and account takeoverEvery payment or login event receives a risk score that the bank's decision logic can use to approve, hold or challenge it. Fraud teams set thresholds themselves, and the vendor states that customers cut false positive alerts by up to 75 percent.
  • Spots scam victims through peer comparisonThe platform compares a customer's activity with the behavior of similar customers and known scam patterns. This helps banks detect authorized push payment scams, where the customer is tricked into sending money, a case that classic card fraud rules often miss.

What sets Featurespace apart

  • Can be deployed on premises or as a hosted cloud service, which matters for banks with strict outsourcing rules.
  • Owned by Visa since December 2024, with products being merged into Visa's fraud and risk-scoring portfolio.

Where Featurespace is strongest

United Kingdom Available internationally

According to Visa, Featurespace is headquartered in Cambridge, UK, and counts British banks such as HSBC and NatWest among its customers.

Questions to ask before you buy Featurespace

Fraud detection is expressly excluded from the high-risk list in Annex III No. 5 of the EU AI Act, but model decisions still need to be explainable to investigators and customers. A hosted setup counts as outsourcing under EBA guidelines and DORA, so contracts need audit and exit rights. Ask how the Visa integration will change the product roadmap, contract party and support.
