Shift Technology sells AI agents that support insurers in claims handling, fraud detection, subrogation and payment integrity. It serves property and casualty, travel, health, workers' compensation and life insurers.

The solutions cover coverage and liability, fraud and risk, subrogation, injury claims, claims process acceleration and payment integrity for health payers. The agents read policies, claim files and documents and prepare decisions for adjusters. The Insurance Data Network adds claim history across participating carriers.

Shift was founded in 2014, is headquartered in Paris and has offices in Boston, Frankfurt, Tokyo, Singapore, London, Madrid, Toronto, Mexico City and São Paulo. It names AXA Switzerland, Assurant, Markerstudy and Mitsui Sumitomo among its customers.

• Checks coverage and liabilityThe coverage and liability agent reads the policy wording, the claim notification and supporting documents and assesses whether the loss is covered and who is liable. Adjusters receive a prepared assessment and can settle clear claims faster.
• Detects claims fraudShift analyzes claims, parties and documents for fraud indicators and assigns suspicious cases to the special investigations unit with the reasons behind the alert. Investigators spend less time on false leads and more on cases worth pursuing.
• Finds subrogation potentialThe subrogation agent identifies claims where another party or insurer may be liable and provides guidance for recovery negotiations. Claims teams recover money that would otherwise be missed in high-volume portfolios.
• Reviews medical bills in injury claimsFor injury claims, the agent evaluates medical bills and treatment plans against the claim facts. Adjusters see which items look inconsistent and can focus reviews on those instead of checking every invoice line.

• Built for insurers, with separate agents for coverage, fraud, subrogation, injury and payment integrity.
• Holds the French HDS certification for health data hosting and states that European health data does not leave the EEA.

Shift is headquartered in Paris. In the US, the vendor states that all five of the largest property and casualty insurers use Shift.

Claims files often contain health data, which falls under GDPR Article 9, so check the data processing agreement and hosting location. Fraud detection is excluded from the high-risk list in Annex III No. 5 of the EU AI Act, while pricing or risk assessment in life and health insurance is high-risk. Clarify outsourcing documentation under EIOPA guidelines and DORA.
