What is freee Accounting?

freee Accounting is a Japanese cloud accounting service for sole proprietors, small companies and midsize firms. It reads documents with AI, proposes journal entries from learned patterns and covers invoicing, expenses and reporting in one system.

freee Accounting combines journal entry, invoicing, spend management, fixed assets, management reporting and consolidated accounting across several companies. freee K.K. also sells payroll, sales and e-signature products that share the same data. The vendor names 710,000 paying customers as of March 2026, a figure that includes sole proprietors, and targets companies from one employee to more than 300.

The product is built around Japanese rules: it supports the qualified invoice system introduced in 2023 and storage under the Electronic Bookkeeping Act, and freee offers a SOC 1 Type 2 report for companies preparing for J-SOX audits.

freee Accounting AI features and use cases

  • Reads receipts and invoicesUsers upload receipts, invoices or statements, and AI text recognition reads the content and creates journal entries. Finance staff check the result instead of typing amounts, dates and partners by hand.
  • Suggests journal entriesfreee combines fully automatic postings with AI guesses that a person confirms. The vendor states that the learning function becomes more precise the more the system is used, which reduces repetitive coding of recurring transactions.
  • Maps accounts from statementsWhen financial statement documents are scanned, AI assigns the lines to the matching accounts. This helps when an accountant takes over prior-year figures and would otherwise map every item by hand.
  • Runs tasks from chatfreee AI connects the products to an external generative AI service through the Model Context Protocol and more than 380 freee APIs. Staff give instructions in a chat, and the agent carries out the work across accounting, HR, sales, invoicing and contracts.

What sets freee Accounting apart

  • Public monthly plans from ¥5,480 excluding tax with a 30-day free trial and no setup fee.
  • Built for Japanese requirements such as the qualified invoice system, electronic bookkeeping storage and J-SOX, with a SOC 1 Type 2 report.
  • Accounting, payroll, sales and e-signature products from one vendor share the same data.

Where freee Accounting is strongest

freee is a Japanese company and reports 710,000 paying customers including sole proprietors (March 2026) and, by its own account, a 56.3 percent share of Japanese cloud accounting.

Questions to ask before you buy freee Accounting

freee Accounting follows Japanese accounting and tax rules, so it fits a Japanese entity or subsidiary rather than a European ledger. The product pages we checked in September 2026 describe a Japanese interface; ask which screens are available in English for your users before you buy. Hosting location and SSO terms are not stated on the public pages. freee AI needs a separate generative AI subscription, so clarify with IT which provider may receive accounting data.

Questions about freee Accounting

Can freee Accounting be tested for free?

Yes. The pricing page states that all plans include a 30-day free trial and that there is no setup fee.

Is freee Accounting suitable for a Japanese subsidiary of a European group?

It is designed for Japanese bookkeeping, the qualified invoice system and electronic storage rules. A subsidiary in Japan can use it locally, while consolidation into a European group ledger needs an export or interface that you should check first.

Which audit documentation does freee provide?

The product page mentions a SOC 1 Type 2 report aimed at companies preparing for an IPO and J-SOX internal control audits.
