DATEV integration in AI bookkeeping software: which tools really hand over receipts and bookings (September 2026)
A DATEV integration in AI bookkeeping software means the tool can pass receipts, extracted data or finished bookings to the German tax advisor's DATEV system. There are 3 routes: the Rechnungsdatenservice 1.0 for receipts with data, the Buchungsdatenservice for booking batches and master data, and a file export in DATEV format. Which one you need depends on who does the bookkeeping, you or the tax advisor.
- DATEV passed 1 million customers in June 2026, and more than 750,000 people use DATEV Unternehmen online.
- Rechnungsdatenservice 1.0 suits companies whose tax advisor books; the Buchungsdatenservice suits companies that book themselves.
- The cloud data services only work for software listed on the DATEV Marktplatz and need the client's authorization in MyDATEV.
- DATEV's own AI proposed more than 7.5 million bookings a month in 2025 and works better with structured e-invoices than with scanned paper.
- From 2027, German companies with more than 800,000 euros in prior-year turnover must issue e-invoices, which changes what the handover carries.
DATEV integration is the first question German finance teams and their tax advisors ask about any AI bookkeeping software. The AI in the tool can read a receipt in seconds, but the work only counts once the data sits in the tax advisor's DATEV system, where year-end accounts, VAT returns and payroll are prepared. A tool that reads well and hands over badly shifts the manual work to the tax firm, which bills for it.
This guide explains the 3 ways data reaches DATEV, which AI bookkeeping tools in our directory use which route, what DATEV's own AI adds on the receiving side, and how e-invoicing changes the picture. It is written for international companies with a German entity as much as for German small businesses. Sources are DATEV's own pages and press releases, vendor documentation and German law, checked in September 2026. ai-toolfinder is independent and paid by no vendor.
Why DATEV decides the choice of bookkeeping software in Germany
DATEV is not a normal software vendor. It is a cooperative based in Nuremberg, and its accounting and payroll software is the de facto standard in German tax firms. At the end of 2025 it had 40,296 members and about 927,900 customers, up 23.8 percent in a year. Revenue rose 9 percent to 1.650 billion euros.
Growth continued in 2026. DATEV reported on July 17, 2026, that its customer base passed 1 million in June and that first half revenue reached 881.0 million euros. More than 750,000 people use DATEV Unternehmen online, the cloud portal where companies and their tax firm share receipts and bank data.
Most of that business now runs in the cloud: cloud offerings brought in 756.6 million euros, or 45.9 percent of 2025 revenue. For companies this means the tax firm increasingly expects receipts and data through the DATEV cloud rather than as files by email.
For a buyer this means a practical rule. If your company works with a German tax advisor, the bookkeeping tool has to deliver into DATEV, whatever its AI can do. International groups meet the same rule when they open a German subsidiary: the local tax advisor will almost always ask for DATEV data, not for access to a foreign ledger.

The 3 DATEV handover routes: Rechnungsdatenservice, Buchungsdatenservice and file export
DATEV offers several cloud data services for accounting. Two matter most for bookkeeping tools. The Rechnungsdatenservice 1.0 sends structured receipt data together with the receipt image to DATEV Unternehmen online, where it lands in Belege online or the cash book and becomes a booking proposal for the tax firm. The Buchungsdatenservice sends finished booking batches, master data and receipt images straight into DATEV Kanzlei-Rechnungswesen, the tax firm's accounting program.
The choice follows who books. Lexware Office explains it plainly in its help center: when the tax firm does the bookkeeping, it needs receipts with their data, so the Rechnungsdatenservice fits. When the company books during the year and the tax firm only prepares the year end, the firm needs receipts and booking batches, so the Buchungsdatenservice fits.
The third route is older: a file export in DATEV format, usually a CSV file with a booking batch, which someone uploads by hand. It works without any cloud connection but carries no receipt images in the same step, and every export is a manual job. A fourth service, the Belegbilderservice, moves only images.
The cloud services have conditions. The source software must be listed on the DATEV Marktplatz, the tax firm needs MyDATEV, and the client has to authorize the transfer. sevdesk adds that these services can only be ordered by tax firms and their clients in DATEV's member-bound client business, set up with a SmartCard or SmartLogin.

Which AI bookkeeping tools use which DATEV route
Vendors describe their DATEV support in very different depth. We checked each vendor's own integration or help page in September 2026 and recorded what it names. Where a page only says "DATEV export" or "DATEV compatible", we list it that way and do not assume a cloud service.
Lexware Office documents all 3 routes: the Rechnungsdatenservice 1.0 for firms that book for their clients, the Buchungsdatenservice for self-bookers, and a CSV export for invoices, booking batches and accounts, included in its plans. GetMyInvoices sends invoices with their extracted data through the Rechnungsdatenservice 1.0 and needs an active MyDATEV client registration; as an alternative it offers the Belegbilderservice.
Candis connects to DATEV Unternehmen online and to DATEV Rechnungswesen. With the second connection, booking records and master data arrive as well, including the pre-coding, receipt images, process documentation and accruals. Candis also exports to SAP Business One, Sage 100, Microsoft Business Central, Agenda, ADDISON and BMD, which matters for companies that keep their own ERP.
Among international tools, Pennylane lets the tax firm work in the same data or sends it a DATEV export, and the German edition of Zoho Books offers a DATEV compatible export with the SKR 03 and SKR 04 charts of accounts. For many US tools in our directory we found no documented DATEV handover at all.

What the AI does before the handover
The AI in these tools works upstream of DATEV. It reads the receipt, proposes an account and matches the receipt to a bank payment, so that the data the tax firm receives is already sorted. The quality of that step decides how much the tax firm still has to fix.
Lexware Office proposes booking categories based on the German SKR03 or SKR04 charts of accounts, including cases like entertainment, fixed assets and reverse charge, and learns from corrections. sevdesk reads date, invoice number, amount, tax and supplier, but its AI receipt capture starts only with the Buchhaltung plan at 22.90 euros a month with annual billing. BuchhaltungsButler includes AI receipt recognition and the DATEV export in every plan, from 3.90 euros a month.
Two tools add checks that go beyond reading. Candis flags missing mandatory invoice details under Section 14 of the German VAT Act and possible fraudulent invoices. The Fraud Risk Assistant of GetMyInvoices looks for manipulated bank details, invoices from invented suppliers and duplicates with a slightly changed invoice number. Both catch errors before they reach the tax firm's books.

DATEV's own AI on the receiving side
DATEV now runs AI of its own on the data that arrives. The Automatisierungsservice Rechnungen creates booking proposals from incoming and outgoing invoices and the client's booking history in the DATEV data center. According to DATEV, it was used in more than 100,000 client ledgers by August 2025, by about 7,000 tax firms, and generated more than 7.5 million booking proposals a month. The Automatisierungsservice Bank, launched in August 2024, was used by about 5,000 firms for about 50,000 ledgers.
The service marks its proposals: a green check for safe ones, yellow or red symbols for uncertain or incomplete ones. It requires the standard SKR03 or SKR04 chart of accounts, DATEV Unternehmen online, open item accounting and data stored in the DATEV data center. DATEV states that it proposes much better postings from structured data than from text read by OCR.
This changes the value of the bookkeeping tool's own AI. If the tax firm already uses DATEV's automation, the most useful thing an upstream tool can deliver is clean, structured data with the receipt image attached. DATEV's AI revenue nearly tripled in 2025, and the invoice service was its strongest AI product, so this setup is becoming common.
Tax firms are also using AI more broadly. In DATEV's spring 2026 digitalization survey, a good half of tax firms said they use AI regularly, up from a third, and almost three quarters of large firms, up from about half.

E-invoicing in Germany changes what the handover carries
German VAT law now defines an electronic invoice as one issued, sent and received in a structured electronic format that allows electronic processing. A PDF counts as an "other invoice". Where the duty to issue e-invoices applies, the recipient's consent is no longer needed, so companies must be able to receive them.
The duty to issue arrives in steps under Section 27(38) of the VAT Act. For supplies in 2025 and 2026, paper and other formats remain allowed until December 31, 2026. In 2027 they remain allowed only for companies whose prior-year turnover was no more than 800,000 euros. After that, the transition ends.
The volume is already large. DATEV processed about 64 million e-invoices in 2025 and more than 51 million in the first half of 2026 alone. For bookkeeping tools, the job shifts from reading images to validating XML files and keeping the XML as the original record, which accounts payable tools such as Candis already do.

How to check a DATEV integration before you buy
Our directory lists 92 AI bookkeeping tools. 12 of them are based in Germany, and 22 can host data in the EU. The filter below lets you compare them by region and see how often each feature appears.
A good first question for the tax advisor is who will book. A second question is the vendor's DATEV Marktplatz listing, because without it the cloud services are out. Then ask for a test transfer with 10 real receipts, including a foreign invoice and a receipt with 2 VAT rates, and let the tax firm look at the result in DATEV before you sign. Our accounting category lists the candidates with their plans and hosting.
Include the handover route when you compare prices. Some tools include the DATEV connection in every plan, others only in higher plans: at Norman, the DATEV export is part of the company plans but not of the plans for the self-employed. For groups with an ERP, compare Candis and similar tools that serve DATEV and the ERP at the same time.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the DATEV Rechnungsdatenservice and the Buchungsdatenservice?
The Rechnungsdatenservice 1.0 sends receipts with their extracted data to DATEV Unternehmen online, where the tax firm books them. The Buchungsdatenservice sends finished booking batches, master data and receipt images into the tax firm's accounting program. The first fits companies whose tax advisor books, the second fits self-bookers.
Does every bookkeeping tool with a DATEV export connect to the DATEV cloud?
No. A file export in DATEV format is a manual upload and does not use the cloud data services. The cloud services require the software to be listed on the DATEV Marktplatz, MyDATEV access and the client's authorization.
Can a US or UK bookkeeping tool work with a German tax advisor?
Only if it can produce data the tax advisor's DATEV system accepts. Among international tools in our directory, Pennylane and the German edition of Zoho Books document a DATEV export; for many US tools we found no documented DATEV handover.
Does DATEV have its own AI for bookkeeping?
Yes. The DATEV Automatisierungsservice Rechnungen proposes bookings from invoices and the booking history, and was used by about 7,000 tax firms in 2025. It works best with structured e-invoice data.
