What is GitHub Copilot?
GitHub Copilot is GitHub's AI coding assistant. It suggests code in the editor, answers questions in chat, reviews pull requests and runs a cloud agent that works on issues and prepares pull requests, for individual developers up to large enterprises.
Copilot provides inline suggestions and next edit suggestions in Visual Studio Code, JetBrains IDEs, Visual Studio, Vim and Neovim, Xcode and Eclipse, with model switching in several IDEs. The cloud agent researches a repository, plans and changes code on a branch in an ephemeral GitHub Actions environment and hands over for review, with sessions of up to 59 minutes.
Plans range from Free to Max for individuals and Business and Enterprise for organizations, which add license management, policy controls and IP indemnity. Enterprise adds repository indexing, custom models and SSO. GitHub, Inc. is based in San Francisco, with GitHub B.V. in Amsterdam, and names Microsoft as an affiliate.
GitHub Copilot AI features and use cases
- Suggests code while typingCopilot proposes the next lines or a whole function from the surrounding code and comments, and next edit suggestions predict where the next change belongs. Developers write routine code faster in the IDE they already use.
- Works issues in the backgroundAssigning an issue to Copilot or mentioning @copilot in a pull request starts the cloud agent, which explores the code, makes changes and runs tests on GitHub. Every step leaves commits and logs for review.
- Reviews pull requestsCopilot code review comments on pull requests in paid plans. Teams catch simple issues before human review starts.
What sets GitHub Copilot apart
- Runs in a broad set of IDEs, including Xcode, Eclipse and Vim.
- Cloud agent works inside GitHub with an auditable trail of commits and logs.
- IP indemnity in Business and Enterprise plans.

Questions to ask before you buy GitHub Copilot
Company use should run through Business or Enterprise, where administrators set policies and the cloud agent must be enabled first. GitHub processes data in the US and other locations. The cloud agent works only on GitHub-hosted repositories and may conflict with some branch protection rules.
