What is NVIDIA Isaac Sim?

Isaac Sim is NVIDIA's robotics simulation platform built on Omniverse. Robotics and automation teams use it to model robots and facilities, generate synthetic training data and train and test control software before it runs on real hardware.

Isaac Sim imports robots from URDF, MJCF and CAD, tunes them for physics accuracy or photorealism and simulates RTX and physics-based sensors. It includes controllers, motion generation and kinematics solvers, a ROS bridge, tools for synthetic data generation and Isaac Lab for reinforcement learning, imitation learning and motion planning.

The source is on GitHub and builds on Windows 11 or Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04. The README names an RTX 4080 as minimum workstation GPU and an A40 for data centers. The repository had 4,165 stars and its latest push on September 18, 2026.

NVIDIA Isaac Sim AI features and use cases

  • Generates synthetic training dataThe synthetic data generation tools render labeled images and sensor data from virtual scenes. Perception teams can train object detection for rare cases or new products without photographing and labeling thousands of real images.
  • Trains robot policies in simulationIsaac Lab runs reinforcement and imitation learning in parallel simulations on the GPU. Engineers can train grasping or locomotion policies safely and quickly before transferring them to the physical robot.
  • Tests software against virtual sensorsSimulated cameras and lidar feed the same software stack as on the real robot, connected through ROS. Integration problems show up before commissioning on site.

What sets NVIDIA Isaac Sim apart

  • Source code is public under Apache 2.0, while required Omniverse components remain under NVIDIA license terms.
  • Combines photorealistic rendering, physics and a ROS bridge in one tool.
  • Isaac Lab for robot learning builds directly on it.

Questions to ask before you buy NVIDIA Isaac Sim

Isaac Sim needs NVIDIA RTX hardware and internet access during the build to download Kit SDK extensions. Read the additional NVIDIA license for Omniverse components before commercial use. Your team maintains the installation, as there is no SLA on the open source code itself.

Questions about NVIDIA Isaac Sim

Is Isaac Sim open source?

The code in the GitHub repository is under Apache 2.0. Building and using it requires additional NVIDIA components, such as the Omniverse Kit SDK, under separate license terms.

What hardware is required?

The README lists an RTX 4080 as minimum for workstations and an A40 for data centers, on Windows 11 or Ubuntu 22.04 or 24.04.

Does it work with ROS?

Yes. The README lists a ROS bridge among the key applications, next to Isaac Lab and synthetic data generation.
