What is MarketMuse?

MarketMuse is content planning and optimization software from Boston for SEO and content teams at brands, publishers and agencies. It uses AI topic models to show which topics a site should cover, how hard they are to rank for and how complete a draft is.

The platform builds an automatically updated inventory of a site's pages and topics. On top of it, users work with content plans, heatmaps of the top 20 search results, content briefs and the Optimize editor, which scores drafts against a topic model and exports to Word and Google Docs. Metrics such as Topic Authority and Personalized Difficulty are calculated for each site.

MarketMuse was founded in 2013 and acquired by Siteimprove in October 2024; the terms of use now name Siteimprove, Inc. as provider. Plans range from a free tier for one user to Strategy with five users, aimed at large teams and agencies.

MarketMuse AI features and use cases

  • Scores content against a topic modelFor a focus topic, MarketMuse analyzes hundreds to thousands of pages, removes low-quality outliers and builds a model of related subtopics. The Content Score shows how well a draft or published page covers that model. Editors see gaps before publication without reading competing pages by hand.
  • Estimates ranking difficulty for the own sitePersonalized Difficulty rates from 1 to 100 how hard a topic is for the specific site, based on its coverage and past performance. Topic Authority and Competitive Advantage add context. Content teams can prioritize topics where their site already has authority.
  • Generates content briefsContent Briefs combine an outline with related topics, questions to answer and linking suggestions, in nine templates such as article, comparison, how-to or product review. Inputs like point of view, tone and target market can be set. Writers receive clear guidance for each assignment.
  • Assists writing with generative AIOptimize includes a generative AI component for creating outlines, expanding concepts and shortening or lengthening passages. The terms of use name OpenAI and Amazon Bedrock as providers of these AI features. Writers draft faster while the topic model stays visible next to the text.
  • Builds content plansContent Plan documents analyze a site and a topic cluster and recommend how many pages to create or update, with keywords, search volume, ranking URL and intent match per cluster. Strategy teams receive a prioritized roadmap based on their own authority within minutes.

What sets MarketMuse apart

  • Difficulty and authority metrics are calculated per customer domain, in addition to generic difficulty scores for a topic.
  • Plans are limited by tracked topics, briefs, strategy documents and queries; a free tier with one user and 10 queries per month is listed.
  • Since the 2024 acquisition, the contracting party is Siteimprove, Inc., which matters for procurement and existing Siteimprove customers.
  • Briefs and drafts can be exported to Microsoft Word and Google Docs.
