Stampli vs Tipalti (October 2026): accounts payable automation, compared independently
Updated · 11 min · by Nick Schäfer- Verdict: Stampli is built around the invoice and the conversation about it, with approvers and AP working in one record and a vendor-built ERP connection list. Tipalti is built around paying suppliers, with payouts to 200+ countries and tax and onboarding checks included.
- Where Stampli leads: Unlimited entities, vendors and PO matching in the AP plan, 14 fully integrated ERPs, SAML single sign-on and a database on AWS in Ireland.
- Where Tipalti leads: A published starting price of $99 per month with unlimited users, eight generally available AI agents, supplier onboarding in 27 languages and payments in 120+ currencies.
- The number that decides: How many cross-border payments you send each month. Tipalti adds fees per invoice and per payment that vary by method and destination, so volume and country mix drive the bill.
- Check before choosing: Hosting and German e-invoices. Tipalti's DPA states hosting on AWS in the United States, Stampli's DPA allows transfers to the US too, and neither page names XRechnung or ZUGFeRD.
Stampli and Tipalti both automate accounts payable (AP): they capture supplier invoices, code them to the general ledger, match them to purchase orders, route approvals and pay. Finance teams compare them because both target midsize and large companies, both are headquartered in California and both now sell AI that does the same steps.
We read both vendors' pricing, AI, security and legal pages in October 2026, added independent funding coverage and user reviews, and compared everything with our own directory data. Read how we review for the method. ai-toolfinder is independent: neither vendor pays for placement on this page, and we earn no commission from either.
Stampli or Tipalti: the verdict
Pick Stampli if approvers across many entities discuss invoices with AP, you run one of its 14 fully integrated ERPs such as SAP S/4HANA, NetSuite or Sage Intacct, and you want the invoice database in an EU region.
Pick Tipalti if you pay many suppliers or other payees across borders, want supplier self-service with tax ID checks, and prefer a published starting price that you can model before you talk to sales.

Stampli vs Tipalti: what it costs per year
List prices according to the vendors, excluding VAT, setup fees, add-on modules and discounts. Currencies are not converted.
Pricing: Tipalti publishes a floor, Stampli publishes a scope
Tipalti's pricing page lists Accounts Payable from $99 per month and Mass Payments from $249 per month, both with unlimited users (as of October 2026). Fees per invoice and per payment come on top, and they vary by payment method and destination. Procurement, expense management, treasury and FX management, and cards are sold as separate modules.
Tipalti says the final cost depends on the number of payments, the number of legal entities, the enabled modules and the payment methods and currencies. Standard implementations are included for common workflows, while complex environments may need paid professional services. Mid-market and enterprise buyers receive a custom quote.
Stampli lists no amounts and asks for a quote. The page does show scope: the Accounts Payable plan includes unlimited invoice capture, entities, locations, vendors and PO matching, 12 prebuilt reports, a dedicated customer success manager, onboarding and training. Procurement, Direct Pay and Stampli Credit Card are listed as add-ons, while virtual and physical cards are free for customers.
Neither vendor publishes contract length, renewal rules or a trial. Ask for the initial term, automatic renewal, price protection at renewal and the full fee schedule in writing. Our directory counts 92 tools for accounts payable automation, and 48 of them sell on request only, so Stampli's quote-only model is common but not the rule.
AI: Stampli bundles one assistant, Tipalti ships a named agent per task
Stampli's AI page describes Billy, which handles invoice processing and coding, two- and three-way matching of purchase orders and receipts, approval routing and monitoring, employee request intake, compliance validation, ERP synchronization, and vendor matching with fraud detection. The vendor says its AI performs on average 89% of finance work across 2,700+ unique fields and was trained on more than $150 billion in annual spend. Those are vendor figures that we could not check independently.
Stampli states that its AI always operates under human oversight and argues against fully touchless AP. Deep Finance, announced on March 31, 2026, analyzes invoice data for spending patterns, pricing shifts and vendor risks and produces summaries and action plans. The press release does not say whether it is generally available or in early access, so confirm that before you count on it.
Tipalti's AI page lists eight agents as available: Reporting, Bill Approvers, Purchase Request, Invoice Capture, Tax Form Scan (reads W-9 data), PO Matching, ERP Sync Resolution and Expense Receipt Scan. A conversational Tipalti AI Assistant sits on top. The September 2025 press release introduced the Reporting, Tax Form Scan, Purchase Request and Branded Experience agents, so part of this set is about a year old.
Data use differs in what is written down. Tipalti states in its FAQ that it does not use customer data to train or fine-tune third-party models, and does not use one customer's data to improve models for others. It adds that third-party providers may process customer data depending on the feature, and that customers can switch AI features off. On Stampli's privacy policy and security page we found no statement on AI training, and the AI page does not name a model provider. Ask for a written statement and the subprocessor list.
ERP fit: Stampli names 14 full integrations, Tipalti names more systems but not their depth
Stampli lists 14 systems with a complete API or cloud integration: Sage Intacct, Sage 100, Sage Intacct Construction, Dynamics GP, Dynamics 365 Business Central, Dynamics 365 Finance, NetSuite, Oracle Fusion, QuickBooks Desktop and Online, SAP ECC, SAP S/4HANA, Acumatica and Dealertrack. A further 50+ systems, among them Workday, Infor, Epicor, Odoo, Sage 300 and Yardi, connect through files.
A file integration means data moves by export and import, so coding, status and payment information may not flow back as automatically as in a full connection. Test the exact path in a pilot. Stampli's CEO says the company builds its ERP integrations from scratch, which is a design claim rather than a measured result.
Tipalti's integrations page lists NetSuite, SAP S/4HANA, SAP Business One, Dynamics 365, Oracle Fusion, Workday, Sage (Intacct, 50, 100, 200, 300 and X3), QuickBooks, Xero, Acumatica, Infor Syteline and Brightpearl. It does not label the depth per system. One Capterra reviewer who came from another tool wrote that it did not integrate with Sage as well as expected, which is a single user opinion, not a finding.
Neither vendor names DATEV or another DACH accounting system on the pages we checked. Stampli's ERP page has no German system at all. A German company on DATEV should ask each vendor how postings reach DATEV, whether through a file export, a partner connector or a custom build, and who maintains it.
Payments: Stampli reaches 100+ countries, Tipalti 200+ with tax and onboarding built in
Tipalti's AP page states payments to 200+ countries, 120+ currencies and 50+ payment methods. Suppliers onboard themselves in 27 languages, tax IDs are validated in 60+ countries, and tax forms such as W-9, W-8BEN-E and VAT validation are collected, which the vendor describes as KPMG-approved. Tipalti is a licensed money transmitter in the US and registered with the US Treasury as a money services business.
Stampli's Direct Pay pays vendors in 100+ countries in US dollars or local currency. It offers target exchange rates, captures IBAN and BIC numbers, and applies approval rules by amount or currency. International payments typically take 4 to 5 business days. The page gives no country list or fees, and says sales provides the list.
The pricing page lists domestic check, ACH, global ACH and wire as built in, and also lists Direct Pay as an add-on. Ask which of these are in your quote. Neither page we checked mentions SEPA by name, so euro payers should confirm it.
If your payables are mostly domestic invoices that need approval, payment reach matters less. If you also pay contractors, affiliates or marketplace sellers in many countries, the Mass Payments plan at Tipalti is the product built for that.
Hosting and security: Stampli names Ireland, Tipalti's DPA names the United States
Stampli's security page says its databases are on AWS in Ireland (eu-west-1) across availability zones. It lists SOC 1, 2 and 3 reports and PCI DSS. ISO 27001 appears only as an assurance of AWS, not as a Stampli certificate. Other listed controls: TLS and AES-256 encryption, SAML single sign-on, two-factor authentication, third-party penetration tests at least annually and daily database backups.
The data processing agreement (DPA) adds a caveat. Stampli transfers personal data to the United States under standard contractual clauses and authorizes 15 subprocessors, including AWS, Mailgun, Intercom, HubSpot and Stripe. The privacy policy mentions servers in Europe and the United States. So "hosted in the EU" describes the database, not every processing step.
Tipalti's DPA states that data is hosted on AWS in the United States, with daily encrypted backups copied to separate data centers. EU standard contractual clauses and a UK addendum are deemed signed with the DPA, and Dutch law applies. Customers have 7 days to object to new subprocessors and may audit once a year after 30 days' notice. Tipalti holds ISAE 3402 (SOC 1) and ISAE 3000 (SOC 2) Type II reports and supports single sign-on with Okta, OneLogin, Microsoft Azure and Google Workspace.
Of the 92 AP tools in our directory, 23 can host data in the EU. Stampli is in that group, Tipalti is not. That does not make Tipalti unusable for European companies, but your data protection officer must assess the US hosting and the transfer basis.
Germany and DACH: e-invoices, works council and a US-centered customer base
In our directory both tools list only the US as a strong market, and neither lists a user interface language. Tipalti publishes a German guide to e-invoicing, but it describes the topic in general terms and names no supported format. For Stampli we found no statement on XRechnung or ZUGFeRD. Treat German e-invoice support as unproven until a pilot shows it.
The rules are clear. According to the European Commission, German businesses must be able to receive e-invoices in the EN 16931 standard since January 1, 2025, and an email address is enough for reception. From January 1, 2027, companies above 800,000 euros in turnover must issue structured e-invoices, and from January 1, 2028 all businesses. Accepted formats are XRechnung, ZUGFeRD 2.1 and Peppol BIS Billing 3.0. Run a test with all three.
Works councils matter too. Section 87 (1) no. 6 of the Works Constitution Act (BetrVG) gives the works council a say on technical systems designed to monitor the behavior or performance of employees. Both tools keep audit trails of who approved what and when. In a company with a works council, clarify whether an agreement is needed. This is not legal advice.
Neither vendor states an EU AI Act classification on the pages we checked. Ask each vendor for its own assessment in writing.
Weaknesses and exit: what users and the contracts say
Capterra showed Stampli at 4.8 of 5 from 463 reviews when we checked. Reported drawbacks include PDF uploads that miss invoice content, auto-coding from history that is inconsistent, missing bulk approval options and pricing described as high compared with BILL and Tipalti. Structural limits come on top: quote-only pricing, a US-centered customer base and no German interface.
Tipalti showed 4.5 of 5 from 179 reviews. Reviewers mention a dated user interface and a steep learning curve for custom approval workflows and supplier onboarding. The fee model needs a real calculation, since each invoice and payment adds a charge, and hosting is in the United States. Reviews are user opinions, so weigh them below the vendors' own documents.
For exit, Stampli's DPA says that on termination and written request it will delete, destroy or return all personal data at the customer's election. Tipalti's DPA says it will return or destroy personal data on request, unless the law requires retention. Neither page documents export formats for invoices, comments and approval history.
Before you sign, ask for a bulk export of invoice images, coding, comments and the audit trail. German retention duties for accounting records may apply to those documents even after you leave.
Who should pick Stampli and who Tipalti
- Many approvers across subsidiaries need to discuss invoices with AP in one place.
- You run SAP S/4HANA, NetSuite, Sage Intacct or Dynamics and want a full integration.
- Invoice data should sit in an EU database and you can accept the listed US transfers.
- You want unlimited entities and vendors without per-entity pricing.
- You pay suppliers or other payees in many countries and currencies.
- Supplier onboarding with tax ID validation and tax forms saves your team real work.
- You want a published starting price and unlimited users.
- You want separate AI agents, such as Tax Form Scan or Purchase Request, that you can switch on or off.
Stampli vs Tipalti: frequently asked questions
Is Stampli cheaper than Tipalti?
It depends on volume. Tipalti starts at $99 per month but adds fees per invoice and per payment, while Stampli publishes no amounts and includes unlimited entities and vendors in its AP plan. Neither publishes contract terms. Compare quotes built on your real invoice and payment counts.
Where do Stampli and Tipalti store data?
Stampli's security page names AWS in Ireland (eu-west-1), though its DPA allows transfers to the US and lists 15 subprocessors. Tipalti's DPA states that personal data is hosted on AWS in the United States, with EU standard contractual clauses for transfers.
Do they train AI on customer data?
Tipalti states that it does not use customer data to train third-party models or models for other customers. On the Stampli pages we reviewed we found no equivalent statement, so ask for one in the contract.
Can they handle German e-invoices?
We found no vendor statement naming XRechnung or ZUGFeRD for either tool. Germany requires businesses to receive EN 16931 e-invoices since January 1, 2025, so test both formats and Peppol in a pilot before you sign.
The bottom line
Decide whether your pain is approving invoices or paying them. If invoices stall between AP and approvers across many entities, and an EU database matters, pilot Stampli. If the hard part is paying suppliers abroad and onboarding them cleanly, pilot Tipalti and model its fees on a real month of payments. For German entities, add XRechnung and ZUGFeRD files to either pilot and involve your data protection officer and works council early.
