Workday vs ADP (October 2026): an independent comparison
Updated · 8 min · by Nick Schäfer- Verdict: ADP is first a payroll company that also sells HR software; Workday is first an HR and finance suite that also runs payroll. Decide which of the two jobs is harder for you.
- Where Workday leads: One data model for HR, finance and payroll, AI agents already used by more than 5,500 customers, and ISO 42001 plus FedRAMP, IRAP and TISAX on its public compliance list.
- Where ADP leads: Payroll processing in 140+ countries and territories, products from 1 employee upward, and 42 million wage earners paid, against six native payroll countries at Workday.
- The number that decides: How many countries you pay people in. Workday runs payroll itself in Australia, Canada, France, the UK, Ireland and the US; elsewhere it relies on partners.
- Check before choosing: Neither vendor publishes prices. Ask Workday how many Flex Credits your agents will use, and ask ADP which agents are live in your product and country today.
Workday and ADP often end up on the same shortlist, but they come from opposite directions. Workday built a cloud suite for HR and finance and added payroll for a handful of countries. ADP, in HR and payroll for more than 75 years by its own account, sells payroll software and outsourcing, from RUN for small firms to ADP Lyric HCM for enterprises.
We read both vendors' product, pricing, security and investor pages on September 28, 2026, checked the laws where each tool is strong and added counts from the ai-toolfinder directory. We sell neither product and earn no commission from either vendor.
Workday or ADP: the verdict
Choose Workday when you have roughly 500 or more employees, want HR, finance and payroll on one data model, and pay most staff in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, France or Australia.
Choose ADP when payroll across many countries is your main problem, when you have fewer than 500 employees, or when you want the vendor to run payroll as a service rather than hand you the software.

What Workday and ADP look like

Payroll: ADP covers 140+ countries itself, Workday covers six and connects the rest
This is the question that splits the two. ADP says Lyric HCM supports payroll processing in more than 140 countries and territories, with a localized system of record for over 100 of them, and counts 42 million wage earners on its platform. It offers payroll and outsourcing services in those markets, so it can take the pay run off your team.
Workday lists native payroll for Australia, Canada, France, the UK and Ireland and the US. Elsewhere it points to certified partners such as CloudPay, Deel and PwC, whose connectors reach more than 180 countries. Outside those six countries, a second company processes your pay.
The two are not always rivals. ADP's own marketplace lists connectors that push new hires and benefit elections from Workday into ADP Workforce Now in near real time, such as the Flexspring integration, so an employer can keep Workday for HR and let ADP pay people. In our directory ADP is one of only 9 payroll tools that are active on several continents.
Company size: ADP starts at 1 employee, Workday GO at 500
ADP sells by headcount band. RUN Powered by ADP covers 1 to 49 employees, ADP Workforce Now covers 50 to 999 and 1,000+, and ADP Lyric HCM targets growing enterprises, domestic or multinational. ADP reports more than 1.1 million clients and kept 92.1 percent of Employer Services client revenue in fiscal 2026.
Workday's smallest offer is Workday GO for 500 to 3,500 employees, which Workday said would be available from February 2026 in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Germany and France. Workday says more than 75 percent of its customers have fewer than 3,500 employees, even though more than 65 percent of the Fortune 500 also use it.
So a company with 80 staff sits inside ADP's Workforce Now band and below Workday GO. Between 500 and 3,500 employees the two compete head on. Above that, payroll countries and the wish to run finance in the same system decide.
AI: Sana agents are in wide use, most ADP Assist agents are newer
Workday has moved away from the Illuminate label, which Josh Bersin notes it used for its agents in prior years, and since March 17, 2026 sells its AI as Sana from Workday. The Sana Self-Service Agent covers more than 300 skills across pay, time and absence, and the Payroll Agent, which finds missing data and handles minimum wage updates, is available now. On August 27, 2026 Workday reported more than 5,500 customers using at least one of its own agents.
ADP's AI is ADP Assist. Workforce Now includes payroll anomaly detection and pay benchmarking drawn from data on 39 million workers. On January 28, 2026 ADP introduced agents for payroll variance checks, missing tax registrations, answers from your employee handbook, reports built from a chat request and talent actions such as starting a promotion by typing it. The release gave no availability dates.
What we could confirm as live is narrower: on April 13, 2026 ADP said its payroll variance agent in ADP Global Payroll serves enterprise clients in more than 40 countries, with midsize clients to follow from mid-2026. Its agents page still calls the agents a work in progress. Workday's compliance page lists ISO 42001 for AI management; ADP's security page names no AI certification. Of the 64 HR suites in our directory, 6 list ISO 42001.
Pricing: both quote, ADP at least names its packages
Neither vendor shows a price as of September 2026. ADP names four RUN packages (Essential, Enhanced, Complete, HR Pro) and three for Workforce Now (Select, Plus, Premium), each behind a Get Pricing form; RUN currently adds 3 months of free payroll for new clients under separate terms.
Workday publishes no rates for HCM or Workday GO. AI runs on Flex Credits: each subscription includes a yearly allotment scaled to company size, and the Self-Service Agent uses 1 credit to look something up and 5 to complete a task. What an extra credit costs is not public.
Quotes are the norm here: about 73 percent of the HR suites we list work that way. Ask both for a three-year total at the same headcount and countries, and ask ADP how it bills each payroll country.
Country fit and compliance: Workday reaches further in Europe and Australia, ADP in France and Canada
Our directory lists Workday as strong in the US, the UK, Germany, Canada and Australia, and ADP in the US, Canada and France. Workday is one of 13 HR suites in our directory that can keep data in the EU, and it announced an EU Sovereign Cloud run by EU staff for 2026. ADP names no data center locations, moves European employee data under Binding Corporate Rules and serves about 2,000 companies in Germany. More of these comparisons sit in Workday vs Oracle HCM and ADP vs Paychex.
France matters to both: Workday runs payroll there natively, and ADP is one of only 2 payroll tools we list as strong in France. French courts in Nanterre (February 2025) and Créteil (July 2025) held that AI tools count as new technology under Article L.2312-8 of the Labor Code, and Créteil suspended an AI rollout until the works council had been consulted. In Germany, § 87(1) no. 6 of the Works Constitution Act gives works councils a say over systems that can monitor performance.
Quebec's Law 25 has required since September 22, 2023 that people be told when a decision about them is fully automated. Illinois has required notice since January 1, 2026 when AI is used in hiring, promotion or discharge. From December 10, 2026, Australian privacy policies must describe automated decisions. The EU AI Act's high-risk duties for employment AI apply from December 2, 2027.
Who should pick Workday and who ADP
- You have 500 or more employees and want HR, finance and payroll on one data model.
- Most of your payroll runs in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, France or Australia.
- You want AI agents already used by more than 5,500 customers, billed on one credit meter.
- Your security review asks for ISO 42001, FedRAMP Moderate, IRAP or TISAX.
- You have fewer than 500 employees and want one vendor as you grow.
- You pay staff in many countries and want one provider to process payroll in each of them.
- You want payroll outsourced rather than software your team operates.
- You already use Workday for HR and need a payroll provider behind it; ADP's marketplace lists ready connectors.
Workday vs ADP: frequently asked questions
Is Workday more expensive than ADP?
Neither publishes a list price as of September 2026. Workday's smallest offer starts at 500 employees, while ADP sells from 1 employee upward, so small firms will mostly only get an ADP quote. Compare three-year quotes at the same headcount, countries and modules.
Can Workday replace ADP for payroll?
In Australia, Canada, France, the UK, Ireland and the US, yes: Workday runs payroll natively there. In other countries Workday relies on partners such as CloudPay, Deel or PwC. ADP processes payroll itself in more than 140 countries and territories.
Can I use Workday and ADP together?
Yes. ADP's marketplace lists connectors, for example from Flexspring and Modulus Data, that send new hires and benefit elections from Workday to ADP Workforce Now. That lets you run HR in Workday and payroll at ADP.
What is the difference between ADP Assist and Sana from Workday?
Both are the vendors' names for their AI assistants and agents. Sana from Workday replaced the earlier Illuminate label and is available to all Workday customers through Flex Credits. ADP Assist powers anomaly detection in Workforce Now, and its newer agents are rolling out by product and country, starting with enterprise payroll.
The bottom line
Count your payroll countries first. With 500 or more employees and most pay runs in Workday's six native countries, Workday gives you one system for people, money and pay. With staff in many other countries, or fewer than 500 employees, ADP is the safer base, and it can sit behind Workday if you want both.
