Workday is a cloud platform covering human resources and finance together, built for midsize and large organizations, based in the United States with a genuinely international customer base. It belongs with the HR suites because HR functionality and an AI layer sell as one product, competing for the same enterprise deals as SAP SuccessFactors.

Workday's AI agent platform carried the name Workday Illuminate through 2025, but now operates under a new brand, Sana from Workday, following Workday's acquisition of Sana AI, which closed in November 2025 and rolled out publicly in March 2026. Sana offers a conversational interface for finding information and taking action across HR and finance data, with domain-specific versions including Agentic HR, plugging into the Agent System of Record, Workday's framework for managing and auditing AI agents centrally. For an HR team, that means asking a plain question about headcount and getting an answer without exporting a report, or letting an agent resolve a routine policy question instead of reaching a service desk.

Anyone evaluating Workday now should ask about Sana rather than Illuminate, since sales materials may still use the older name. As with other suites automating performance or workforce planning, German employers should clarify works council involvement early, since Section 87 BetrVG can apply to systems evaluating employee performance. Workday holds ISO 42001 certification for AI management and hosts data across multiple regions, worth confirming per contract. It fits midsize and large organizations, strong in the US, UK, Germany, France, Australia, Japan, India and Canada.
