What is Abacus?

Abacus is Swiss business software covering finance, HR, payroll and other company processes for businesses of all sizes, with AI features under the Abacus Intelligence name, such as a voice-controlled employee app and an assistant for staff regulation questions.

Abacus Research AG is a Swiss vendor of integrated business software covering finance, human resources, payroll, time tracking, expense management and project management in one system. Based in Wittenbach near St. Gallen and founded in 1985, it describes itself as the largest independent Swiss provider of business software and serves companies of all sizes. About 10,000 companies use its Swissdec-certified payroll software, which produces over 1.5 million payslips a month.

Abacus AI features and use cases

  • Answers HR questions by voice and chatThe AbaClik AI employee app combines a chatbot with voice control, so staff can record working time by voice command, also in Swiss German. The assistant answers questions about staff regulations.
  • Supports the analysis of applicationsThe Abacus applicant management factsheet (version 02-2026) lists AI support for analysing and comparing applications as a basis for decisions. The vendor states the final decision stays with the HR team.
  • Builds reports and dashboards on requestThe Data Analyzer generates key figures and dashboards on request. An HR generalist can get an overview of staffing data without briefing IT for a custom report.
  • Drafts job ads from bullet pointsAutomatic text generation turns bullet points into fluent text, for example for job ads or project descriptions. HR teams start from a draft rather than a blank page and should review it before it is published.

What sets Abacus apart

  • Abacus Intelligence was developed together with Artificialy SA, a company based in Lugano, and its voice control understands several languages including Swiss German.
  • Combines HR and payroll with full ERP: finance, procurement, project management and time tracking sit in the same system.
  • Publishes no price list; every quote follows a sales conversation. Free test environments exist for some other modules, not for payroll or HR.
  • The privacy policy names Abacus Hosting AG with servers in Swiss data centers and says Abacus uses US providers such as Microsoft, Zoom, Google and Zendesk for some services.

Questions to ask before you buy Abacus

Abacus does not publish prices; a quote follows an advisory conversation, and it is worth clarifying which modules are actually needed. The free test environments do not include payroll or HR, so ask for a demo of those modules. If you use the AI support in applicant management, check whether it counts as a high-risk system under the EU AI Act for recruitment, whose obligations apply from December 2, 2027; the vendor makes no public statement on the AI Act. EU customers will also need a data processing agreement under Article 28 GDPR.
