What is Browser Use?

Browser Use is an open-source framework that lets a language model control a web browser to complete tasks such as navigating sites and filling in forms. Developers and automation teams embed it in Python applications or use the hosted cloud.

Browser Use runs in three modes: as a Python library for custom applications, as a CLI tool for existing agents, and as the hosted Browser Use Cloud. The library is MIT-licensed. The project offers its own model, BU2, optimized for browser automation, and also works with Claude, GPT, Gemini and local models through Ollama. The cloud adds browsers with proxies and bills browser time, traffic and model usage. Behind the project is Browser Use Inc., a US company whose terms of service follow California law. On GitHub the repository had about 116,600 stars and commits on September 26, 2026.

Browser Use AI features and use cases

  • Completes web tasks from a promptThe agent opens a browser, navigates pages, fills in forms and completes steps such as picking a date and booking a slot. Operations teams can automate work on web portals that offer no API.
  • Chooses between hosted and local modelsTeams can use the BU2 model, commercial models through a gateway, or local models through Ollama. Data-sensitive tasks can run with a local model on company hardware.
  • Extends the agent with company functionsDevelopers register their own functions as tools that the agent can call during a task, for example to look up an internal record. This links browser work to internal systems.

What sets Browser Use apart

  • MIT-licensed Python library with about 116,600 GitHub stars in September 2026.
  • Runs as library, CLI or hosted cloud with usage-based pricing and no subscription.
  • Supports local models through Ollama for self-hosted setups.

Questions to ask before you buy Browser Use

An autonomous agent acts in a real browser, so define which sites and accounts it may use and keep a person reviewing actions with legal or financial effect. The tool offers features for bypassing CAPTCHAs and bot protection: the hosted cloud browser comes with stealth mode, CAPTCHA solving and residential proxies. Using them can breach the target sites' terms of use and is legally risky in Germany, for example under Section 202a of the German Criminal Code (StGB) or database rights. Have their use legally reviewed before deployment. Model costs add to cloud costs, and page content goes to the model provider you choose.
