What is Kintsugi?

Kintsugi automates US sales tax and international indirect tax for ecommerce, SaaS and direct-to-consumer companies. It monitors where thresholds are crossed, registers, calculates and files, and uses AI to classify products, validate addresses and answer questions through its assistant Kin.

Kintsugi covers the sales tax lifecycle for growing companies. This includes exposure monitoring across all US states and more than 100 countries, registration, calculation, filing, remittance and exemption certificates. A virtual mailbox collects tax notices. It connects without code to Shopify, Stripe, Chargebee and BigCommerce and, on the Premium plan, to QuickBooks, NetSuite and Microsoft Dynamics 365. NetSuite customers can use Vertex's tax engine through Kintsugi. The company is based in San Francisco and says more than 7,000 businesses use it.

Kintsugi AI features and use cases

  • Classifies products for each stateKintsugi uses AI to assign products to the right tax category, since the same item can be taxed differently from state to state. Finance teams avoid mapping every SKU by hand when they start collecting in new states.
  • Validates addresses for exact ratesAI-based address validation corrects customer addresses so the rate can be determined down to local districts. This reduces under- or overcollection caused by typos or incomplete addresses in checkout or billing data.
  • Answers questions with the Kin assistantKin is an in-app assistant that answers questions about filings, tax rates and transactions based on the company's own data. A controller can ask why a state shows exposure or what was filed without opening several reports.
  • Warns before thresholds are crossedKintsugi tracks economic nexus thresholds across US states and more than 100 countries and sends alerts. Small finance teams learn early where a registration duty is coming instead of discovering it during an audit.

What sets Kintsugi apart

  • Offers a free plan that already includes exposure monitoring, AI product classification, address validation and the Kin assistant.
  • Charges per filing or registration from $75 on the Starter plan instead of per transaction, with no onboarding fees or long-term contracts.
  • Gives NetSuite customers access to Vertex's tax engine through Kintsugi.

Where Kintsugi is strongest

Kintsugi is based in San Francisco and built around US sales tax with more than 13,000 local taxing authorities; the vendor says more than 7,000 businesses use it.

Questions to ask before you buy Kintsugi

Kintsugi is built mainly for US sales tax, so check coverage and filing support for any other countries you sell into. Estimate costs from your number of filings and registrations, since Starter charges per filing. ERP connectors for QuickBooks, NetSuite and Dynamics 365 and SSO come with Premium. Ask for data hosting details and a DPA, which we did not find on the public pages in September 2026.
