What is LangGraph?

LangGraph is a low-level open-source framework for building AI agents that run for a long time, keep state and let humans step in. Developers use it when simple prompt chains are not enough for a business process.

LangGraph models agents as graphs of steps with persistent state. It is built by LangChain Inc., works with LangChain products and pairs with LangSmith for observability and evaluation and LangSmith Deployment for production hosting. It is available in Python and JavaScript. The repository had about 42,400 stars and a last push on September 27, 2026.

LangGraph AI features and use cases

  • Runs long processes reliablyDurable execution stores the agent's state, so a run continues where it stopped after an error. Multi-step processes such as document reviews do not start over.
  • Puts people in the loopHumans can inspect and change the agent's state at defined points, for example before an email is sent. Critical steps get a human approval.
  • Remembers contextShort-term working memory and long-term memory keep context across sessions. Assistants can build on earlier conversations with the same user.

What sets LangGraph apart

  • Built-in human-in-the-loop controls for agent workflows.
  • MIT-licensed, with optional paid observability and hosting from the same company.

Questions to ask before you buy LangGraph

LangGraph is a developer framework, so you need engineering capacity to build and run agents. If agents make decisions about people, such as applicants, plan human oversight, since the EU AI Act treats such uses as high-risk from December 2, 2027. Decide where agent state and memory are stored.
