What is Vertex?
Vertex is indirect tax software for large and midsize companies with complex transactions. It determines sales tax and VAT inside ERP and commerce systems and adds e-invoicing, reporting and filing, now with AI agents that maintain product mappings and tax rules.
Vertex has been in the tax software business since 1978 and describes itself as an indirect tax and compliance company covering determination, e-invoicing, reporting, filing and audit defense. According to its website, 4,500 companies use Vertex, including more than 60 percent of the Fortune 500. Its content covers more than 20,000 jurisdictions in 195 countries with over one billion rates and rules. The company is based in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, and trades on Nasdaq under the ticker VERX.
Vertex AI features and use cases
- Maps products to tax categoriesThe Product Mapping Agent applies product tax classifications uniformly across jurisdictions. Tax teams with large catalogs no longer have to assign thousands of items country by country, which lowers the risk of the same product being taxed differently in different systems.
- Flags impact of tax content updatesThe Configuration Agent identifies where changes in Vertex tax content could affect a company's own configuration. The tax department sees which settings need attention after a rate or rule update instead of discovering errors later in transactions.
- Writes tax rules from plain languageThe Text-to-Tax Agent lets users create tax rules by describing them in natural language. Rule maintenance depends less on specialists who know the configuration syntax, and changes can be documented in words the business understands.
- Spots patterns across ERP dataERP and workflow agents detect transaction patterns and help reconcile tax data across enterprise systems, while anomaly detection is meant to surface irregularities earlier. Finance teams spend less time matching tax amounts between the ERP, the tax engine and returns.

Questions to ask before you buy Vertex
Vertex publishes no prices, so request a quote that separates the tax engine, e-invoicing and AI agent functions. Confirm the connector for your ERP, such as SAP, Oracle or Microsoft Dynamics, and how tax results are written back. The Trust Center offers SOC 1 and SOC 2 Type II reports. It lists AWS, Oracle and Microsoft data centers in the US, Ireland, Germany and Switzerland, so ask which region serves your data. Clarify who approves rules created by the Text-to-Tax Agent before they go live.

- Data locationMultiple regions, EU region available (according to the vendor). Hosting regions: United States, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland.
