What is GitBook?
GitBook is a platform for product and developer documentation that syncs with GitHub or GitLab and uses AI to write, review and translate content and to answer readers' questions, from single maintainers to large companies.
GitBook offers a block-based editor, two-way sync with GitHub and GitLab, API playgrounds and preview deployments. Paid plans add team collaboration, custom domains, analytics and, in Ultimate, adaptive content and site sections. The platform integrates with Slack, GitHub and Linear. GitBook says more than two million people use it, and its company page lists an address in California. Customer data is stored in US data centers on Google Cloud.
GitBook AI features and use cases
- Writes and edits documentationGitBook Agent creates and edits content on request. Documentation teams get drafts for new pages and revisions of existing ones, which shortens the time from feature release to published docs.
- Reviews change requestsThe agent takes part in the review of change requests, GitBook's equivalent of pull requests. Reviewers get a second check on wording and consistency before content goes live.
- Translates and keeps translations in syncAuto-updating translations keep documentation in several languages in sync with the source. Essential charges for it by word volume, and Ultimate includes it. Teams can publish multilingual docs without maintaining each language by hand.
- Answers readers' questionsGitBook Assistant answers reader questions based on the documentation. Essential includes 500 successful answers as a soft limit, and Ultimate adds AI Insights that show what readers look for. Support teams may receive fewer basic questions.
What sets GitBook apart
- Two-way Git sync with GitHub and GitLab, so docs can live next to the code.
- Pricing per site plus per user, with a free plan that includes the agent at 10 messages per week.
- An MCP server is included in all plans, from Free to Enterprise.
