What is Ironclad?

Ironclad is contract lifecycle management (CLM) software from San Francisco for creating, reviewing, signing, storing and analyzing contracts. It serves legal, procurement, sales and finance teams in mid-sized and large companies.

Ironclad covers each stage of a contract: templates and self-service creation, approval workflows, collaborative review, electronic signature, a searchable repository and tracking of renewals and obligations. It connects to Salesforce, Microsoft Word and other tools through integrations and an API. The AI suite consists of Ironclad Assistant, Ironclad Agents and Jurist, an AI contract partner for commercial lawyers.

Ironclad Inc. is headquartered in San Francisco and started out of Y Combinator in 2015. The vendor reports more than 2,000 customers and over 2 billion processed contracts. The platform fits companies with an in-house legal or legal operations team and a steady flow of contracts.

Ironclad AI features and use cases

  • Answers questions about the contract repositoryIronclad Assistant lets users search contracts in natural language and finds clauses by meaning, even when the exact words differ. Legal and business teams get answers about terms and renewals without Boolean searches or asking the legal team.
  • Redlines contracts against the playbookJurist applies the company's playbook positions and fallbacks to an incoming contract and produces a first-pass redline in seconds. A Word add-in brings this into Microsoft Word, so lawyers review suggestions where they already work.
  • Flags risks and extracts key termsJurist identifies legal, financial and operational risks based on playbooks and historical positions, extracts key terms and writes summaries. Reviewers see what needs attention before reading the full document and can focus on the clauses that matter.
  • Automates routine contract stepsIronclad Agents carry out tasks within the contract workflow, such as approvals, reminders and routing, according to the company's own rules. Legal teams spend less time moving contracts between people by hand.
