What is Retorio?
Retorio is a Munich based AI coaching platform built for large enterprises, generally above a thousand employees or several hundred customer facing staff. It started analyzing job applicant videos for recruiting, but the company has since moved away from that: Retorio now positions itself as a coaching tool for people already employed, covering sales, customer service, and leadership, not a tool for screening or ranking candidates.
Sessions pair an employee with a photorealistic AI avatar for a role play conversation, drawing on 93 avatars, dozens of voices, and 14 languages according to the company. The system scores the conversation across verbal content, vocal delivery such as pace and pitch, and visible behavior such as eye contact and posture, rating applied knowledge, active listening, empathy, and confidence. Managers get scorecards and team level reporting over time. In practice this fits onboarding new sales hires, rehearsing difficult customer conversations, and building leadership skills through repeated practice rather than live evaluation.
Because Retorio processes employee voice and video during training rather than screening applicants, the EU AI Act's high risk recruitment rules do not apply the way they might have under its earlier product. Clarify internally, and with the works council where one exists, how recordings and scorecards are handled, since German law gives works councils a say over systems that can monitor staff behavior. Data stays hosted in the EU across Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure, certified to ISO 27001. Retorio fits Germany and Austria well given its Munich and Vienna offices, though scale and pricing mean it rarely suits small companies.
