What is Sovos?

Sovos is a tax compliance cloud for companies that must issue e-invoices, determine indirect tax and file regulatory reports in many countries. Its embedded AI layer, Sovi, answers regulatory questions, diagnoses errors and maps products to tax codes.

Sovos groups its products into an indirect tax suite with e-invoicing, tax determination and filing. An information reporting and withholding suite covers US forms such as 1099, crypto tax and ACA reporting. Specialty products address unclaimed property, wine and spirits and insurance premium tax. The company is headquartered in Atlanta and majority owned by the investor Hg. It says it serves more than 100,000 customers, including half of the Fortune 500, and processes nearly 20 billion transactions a year across more than 150 countries.

Sovos AI features and use cases

  • Answers regulatory questions in contextAsk Sovi is an assistant built into the Sovos Tax Compliance Cloud that gives context-aware answers to regulatory questions while users work. Tax and e-invoicing staff get guidance on mandates without leaving the platform or searching country rules themselves.
  • Diagnoses rejected documents and errorsSovi's error diagnosis explains why a submission or e-invoice failed and proposes a fix that the user approves. Teams handling rejections from tax authorities spend less time decoding error codes and can clear backlogs faster.
  • Maps products to tax codesSovi classifies products automatically and maps them to the correct tax codes and reporting schemas. This reduces the manual mapping work when a company enters a new country or adds large numbers of items to its catalog.
  • Surfaces compliance risk in dataSovos Intelligence and Sovi let users ask questions about their data to find trends and compliance risks, and create charts and dashboards from raw data. Tax managers can see exposure earlier without building custom reports in a separate tool.

What sets Sovos apart

  • Combines global e-invoicing mandates with US information reporting such as Form 1099 in one platform.
  • Publishes its data processing addendum and a subprocessor list per product line, including the AI providers behind Sovi such as Amazon Bedrock and Anthropic.
  • Includes specialty compliance products for insurance premium tax, unclaimed property and alcohol shipping.

Questions to ask before you buy Sovos

Sovos publishes no prices, so ask for a quote per country and mandate, since e-invoicing fees often depend on document volume. Check which ERP connectors exist for SAP, Oracle or Microsoft Dynamics and who maintains them. Ask where invoice data is stored and archived for each country and for current SOC reports. The subprocessor list names US cloud providers, so review data transfers. Clarify which Sovi actions change data and how approvals are logged for auditors.
