What is Jem?
Jem is a workforce platform from South Africa that runs HR admin, payslips, leave, time and attendance and staff communication for deskless teams through WhatsApp. Its AI agent Lutho answers workforce questions and prepares workflow drafts for managers.
Jem, founded in 2020 as SmartWage, delivers HR services to frontline employees in a WhatsApp chat, so no separate app is needed. Staff without smartphones can use a USSD line or phone support. Modules cover announcements, two-way messaging, surveys, payslips, HR documents, leave, a query inbox, and time and attendance with GPS-verified clock-in. A reward area adds earned wage access, vouchers and financial education. Jem says it reaches more than 200 employers and 250,000 deskless workers, with customers such as KFC, Edgars, Leroy Merlin and Swissport. It connects to Sage, PaySpace, SimplePay, SAP and Xero through the integration platform Flowgear. In August 2026 it raised an 8.4 million dollar Series A led by Quona Capital.

- Answers workforce questionsLutho, Jem's AI agent, answers questions about the workforce against the customer's own data in Jem. Operations and HR managers at employers with many sites get an answer without pulling lists from several modules first.
- Prepares workflows for confirmationWhen asked to do something, Lutho opens the matching workflow, prepares the draft and hands it back for a person to confirm. According to Jem, a person still makes every decision, and the agent takes over the preparation work that comes before it.
- Connects outside AI assistantsThe pricing page lists Jem MCP together with Lutho. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard for connecting AI assistants to business software. Jem does not publish which data or actions the connection covers, so the scope needs to be confirmed in a demo.

Questions to ask before you buy Jem
Pricing is per deskless worker and only available by quote, and Lutho costs extra in the Standard plan. Jem announced Lutho as live in August 2026 while its product page still listed the Jem Hub as coming soon, so confirm access in a demo. In South Africa, POPIA makes the employer responsible for staff data, and the Employment Equity Act also covers AI-assisted decisions. Ask for the data processing agreement and the Google Cloud region.
