What is Avalara?
Avalara is a tax compliance platform for companies that sell across many jurisdictions. It calculates sales tax, VAT and GST, manages exemption certificates, files returns and handles e-invoicing, with AI features for reporting, certificate checks and product classification.
Avalara's product family centers on AvaTax, a tax calculation engine that plugs into ERP, ecommerce, billing and point of sale systems. Further modules cover exemption certificate management, returns filing, cross-border classification and e-invoicing with live reporting. Avalara says it supports more than 43,000 businesses and government entities in over 75 countries and lists more than 1,400 partner integrations. The company is headquartered in Durham, North Carolina. Vista Equity Partners took it private in October 2022 for $8.4 billion and remained majority shareholder after a $500 million investment led by BlackRock in November 2025.
Avalara AI features and use cases
- Finds anomalies in tax dataAI Reporting in AvaTax analyzes transaction data, detects anomalies and trends and turns them into insights. Tax teams can spot unusual rates, jurisdictions or volumes without building their own reports, which shortens the review before a filing deadline.
- Validates exemption certificatesAI Certificate Validation in Avalara's exemption certificate management reads uploaded certificates with document processing and checks them automatically. Natural language search helps staff find customers and certificates. This cuts manual review of paperwork that otherwise piles up before an audit.
- Explains tax decisions on purchasesIn AvaTax for Accounts Payable, AI Tax Summary explains in plain language why a tax amount was determined on a vendor invoice, and Smart Rule Recommendations suggest rule changes based on transaction patterns. Payables and tax staff spend less time tracing individual determinations.
- Answers tax research questionsAvi for Tax Research sits in the Avalara portal and answers tax questions with citations, and an Avi browser extension offers setup help in systems such as Shopify, Dynamics 365 and QuickBooks. Teams get a first answer with sources before involving an adviser.
What sets Avalara apart
- Covers calculation, exemption certificates, returns filing and e-invoicing in one vendor, with more than 1,400 partner integrations according to Avalara.
- Trust center lists SOC 1 Type 2 and SOC 2 Type 2 reports and ISO 27001 for its most used products, which matters for auditors relying on the tax engine.
- Publishes its data processing agreement openly in its legal center, with standard contractual clauses for transfers outside the EEA.

Questions to ask before you buy Avalara
Clarify which modules you need, since bundles differ by product. Sales tax plans are priced per US state, so model the cost for the number of states where you file. Check that your ERP or billing system has a certified connector and how tax results flow back into the ledger. Certifications vary by product, so ask for the SOC 1 report covering the exact products your auditors rely on. The DPA allows subprocessors outside the EEA under standard contractual clauses.
