Kintsugi is the first alternative to test for small and midsize US sellers, because it starts free and charges per filing instead of per state and month. Vertex fits enterprises that run tax inside SAP or Oracle. Sovos and Fonoa fit companies whose main problem is e-invoicing and VAT across many countries.
- Avalara's Core Compliance plan costs $79 per state and month, or $799 per state and year, for companies below $50 million revenue.
- Vista Equity Partners took Avalara private on October 19, 2022 and remained majority owner after a $500 million BlackRock-led investment in November 2025.
- Avalara Aviator, announced September 23, 2026, reaches general availability only after October 2026; several agent functions are still on the roadmap.
- Kintsugi's free plan includes exposure monitoring and AI product categorization; filing starts at $75 per filing or registration.
- German businesses of every size must issue e-invoices to other businesses from January 1, 2028.
Avalara is the default name in US sales tax automation. Its AvaTax engine plugs into ERP, ecommerce and billing systems, and the company says it serves more than 43,000 businesses and government entities in over 75 countries. For a merchant that crosses nexus thresholds in a handful of states, it removes a real compliance risk.
The reasons to look elsewhere are mostly structural. The published plans are priced per state, so the bill rises with every new registration. The company has been privately owned since 2022, which some buyers read as a signal for pricing discipline. And companies selling into Europe now face e-invoicing mandates where other vendors started earlier. This page checks each point against primary sources as of September 26, 2026 and sorts the alternatives by where you sell.
Shortlist: which Avalara alternative fits which situation
KintsugiFits US ecommerce and SaaS sellers below enterprise size. The free plan covers exposure monitoring for all US states and more than 100 countries, AI product categorization, address validation and the Kin assistant. Registration and filing start at $75 each, so a seller with few filings pays less than a per state subscription.
VertexFits large companies that run indirect tax inside SAP, Oracle or another ERP and need one engine across many legal entities. Vertex has been in tax technology since 1978 and says more than 60 percent of the Fortune 500 use it. Pricing is by quote.
SovosFits multinationals where e-invoicing and real-time reporting mandates are the pressing issue. Sovos says more than 100,000 companies use its platform and that it covers about 200 countries. No prices are published.
FonoaFits digital platforms and marketplaces with tax obligations in many countries. The Dublin company lists tax ID validation in 120+ countries, tax calculation in 200+ and e-invoicing in 150+. Its Agents product is marked coming soon, so judge it on the live modules.
Per state pricing: how the Avalara bill grows
Avalara publishes three plans for US sales tax. Core Compliance costs $79 per state and month or $799 per state and year and is open to companies with less than $50 million annual revenue. It bundles AvaTax calculation, managed returns filing, nexus monitoring, exemption management and compliance support. Core Compliance with SST Services costs $69 per state and month or $699 per year, for sellers that qualify for the Streamlined Sales Tax program in up to 25 member states.
Above $50 million revenue the Custom plan applies, priced by quote with multi-entity management and a one-hour support response time. Avalara names no free trial on the pricing page. That matters for planning: a merchant filing in six states on monthly billing pays $474 a month on list prices, and each new state adds $79.
Kintsugi prices the same work differently. The free plan covers exposure monitoring, AI product categorization and no-code shop connections, and the Starter plan charges from $75 per filing or registration. A seller that files quarterly in a few states can end up well below a per state subscription; a seller with monthly filings in many states may not. Run your own filing calendar through both models before deciding.
The calculator uses only Avalara's published list prices. Move the slider to your number of filing states to see the monthly and annual totals.

Ownership and product changes since 2022
Vista Equity Partners completed its acquisition of Avalara on October 19, 2022, paying $93.50 per share in cash, and the shares left the New York Stock Exchange. On November 11, 2025 Avalara announced a $500 million investment led by BlackRock's Private Financing Solutions, with Vista remaining the majority shareholder. Private equity ownership is not a problem in itself, yet buyers tend to ask for price caps at renewal when a vendor carries investor money that needs a return.
On the product side, Avalara announced Avalara Aviator on September 23, 2026. It is an agent hub in which an orchestrating agent called Avi coordinates specialist agents. The first functions map products to tax codes, report on transaction data, validate exemption certificates, generate tax matrices and configure custom rules, and existing customers receive them at no extra cost.
Read the announcement carefully before counting it as a reason to stay. Avalara says general availability follows its CRUSH Europe event in October 2026, and self-healing fixes and anomaly detection are described as later steps. Our review method lists only generally available AI features, so we treat Aviator as announced until it ships.

Four alternatives, sorted by where you sell
The alternatives split along one line: US sales tax versus VAT and e-invoicing abroad. Kintsugi sits on the US side. It connects without code to Shopify, Stripe, Chargebee and BigCommerce, monitors thresholds in all states, and moves multi-country compliance into its Premium plan with flat, quoted pricing.
Vertex covers both sides for large companies. Its content spans more than 195 countries and territories and over one billion tax rates and rules, and its pitch is aimed at enterprises with a central ERP team. For a midsize online shop that is more engine than needed, and the sales cycle is longer than a self-serve signup.
Sovos and Fonoa come from the international side. Sovos combines tax determination, filing and e-invoicing and says it covers about 200 countries. Fonoa splits its platform into Validate, Tax Engine, E-Invoicing and Returns, plus Knowledge and Audit for monitoring rule changes. Neither publishes prices, so both require a sales conversation.
The cards below condense where each vendor fits and where it does not. They leave out tools that appear in many Avalara alternative lists but are not in our directory, because we have not checked them at the source.

Selling into Europe: e-invoicing moves the decision
For European sales the question is less which tax rate applies and more how an invoice must travel. Germany made the structured e-invoice the rule for domestic B2B sales from 2025. Section 27(38) of the German VAT Act allows paper or other electronic formats until December 31, 2026, and until December 31, 2027 for businesses with prior year turnover of up to €800,000. From January 1, 2028 the transition ends for everyone.
At EU level, the VAT in the Digital Age package was adopted on March 11, 2025 and entered into force on April 14, 2025. Since then member states may introduce mandatory e-invoicing under specific conditions. Digital reporting requirements for cross-border B2B transactions follow on July 1, 2030, and countries with their own real-time reporting systems must align them by January 1, 2035.
This shifts the shortlist. A US merchant with a few European customers can keep a sales tax engine and add an e-invoicing provider. A company invoicing thousands of European business customers should compare e-invoicing coverage first and tax calculation second. The switch below shows both starting points side by side.
Two starting points
US sales tax or European VAT: different shortlists
- Price is driven by the number of states where you file
- Avalara lists $69 to $79 per state and month below $50 million revenue
- Kintsugi starts free and charges per filing
- Vertex fits when an ERP team runs tax for many entities

What our directory says about tax tools
Our directory lists 62 tools for tax automation, Avalara included. 10 of them state an EU hosting option and 26 offer a free trial. The tile field below shows every tool of the niche by headquarters country.
The count overstates the real choice. Only five tools in the niche are indirect tax engines that can replace Avalara: Avalara itself, Kintsugi, Vertex, Sovos and Fonoa. Most of the German tiles are AI research assistants for tax advisors, such as Haufe CoPilot Tax or NWB KIRA, and bookkeeping apps like sevdesk. They answer tax questions or keep books, but they do not calculate and file sales tax across jurisdictions.
That gap is useful to know when a vendor list promises dozens of alternatives. For US sales tax the realistic shortlist is two or three names, and for European e-invoicing it is a different two or three. The wider tax and audit category also holds tools for audit and internal controls.

Switching tax engines without a filing gap
A tax engine switch fails when one period falls between two systems. Pick the cutover at the start of a filing period, ideally a quarter, and let Avalara file the last period it calculated. Export exemption certificates, registration numbers and the filing calendar per state before notice goes out.
Map product tax codes early. Avalara, Kintsugi and Vertex each use their own classification, and a wrong mapping changes the rate on every order. Run the new engine in shadow mode for one period and compare the calculated tax per transaction before it goes live.
In the EU, contracts for cloud services also fall under the Data Act, which has applied since September 12, 2025 and bans switching charges from January 12, 2027. Ask for the export formats in writing, including certificate images and filing confirmations.
- Choose the cutoverStart of a filing period, with the last Avalara period filed by Avalara.
- Export the recordsExemption certificates, registrations and the filing calendar per state.
- Map tax codesTranslate product classifications before the first order.
- Shadow one periodCompare calculated tax per transaction between old and new engine.
- Switch filingMove registrations and filing only after the comparison matches.
