What is BILL?
BILL is accounts payable and receivable software for small and midsize businesses in the United States and their accounting firms. It captures and codes bills, routes approvals and pays vendors, with AI agents taking over coding and W-9 collection.
BILL receives bills by email, PDF upload or mobile photo, routes them through approval rules and pays vendors by ACH, card, check or international wire. Higher plans add procurement and two- and three-way matching, while Enterprise adds multiple entities, dual control and API access. The software syncs with QuickBooks, Oracle NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Microsoft Dynamics and Xero. Spend & Expense, a separate product with corporate cards, is free. BILL, founded in 2006 and based in San Jose, is listed on the New York Stock Exchange and reports close to half a million customers.
BILL AI features and use cases
- Codes multi-line billsThe Invoice Coding Agent extracts line items from incoming bills and assigns accounts based on how the company coded similar bills before. BILL states that this cuts manual time by 20 percent, so the AP team or the outside bookkeeper mainly reviews the suggestions.
- Collects W-9 forms from vendorsThe W-9 Agent emails vendors on its own, collects their W-9 tax forms and enters the data into BILL. According to the vendor, this removes over 80 percent of the manual steps, which eases year-end 1099 reporting in the US.
- Fills in bill details automaticallyWhen a bill arrives, the AI reads vendor name, email and invoice number and fills in the bill record. It flags duplicate invoices and uses payment history to point out bills that seem to be missing, which prevents double payments and late fees.
- Monitors payments for fraudPredictive AI watches transactions in real time and flags suspicious activity before money leaves the account. For small finance teams without a dedicated controls function, this adds a check that would otherwise depend on someone spotting the problem by chance.
What sets BILL apart
- Publishes per-user prices from $49 per month, along with a separate list of transaction fees for ACH, check, card and wire payments.
- Built for the US workflow, including W-9 collection for 1099 reporting and a network in which 8.3 million members pay or get paid.
- Widely used by accounting firms that manage payables for several clients from one login, according to the vendor 98 of the top 100 US firms.
Where BILL is strongest

Questions to ask before you buy BILL
Calculate total cost: user fees are only part of the price, since each ACH payment, check and wire carries its own fee regardless of plan. Two- and three-way matching is included from the Corporate plan and an add-on below it, while single sign-on, multiple entities and dual control require Enterprise. Ask for the SOC 1 report for your auditors and confirm where AP data is hosted, as the security page does not name a region for it.
