What is Melio?

Melio is a bill pay and accounts payable platform for US small businesses and the accountants who serve them. It captures bills with AI, routes approvals, pays vendors by ACH, card or check and syncs with QuickBooks, Xero and NetSuite.

Melio lets businesses pay bills by bank transfer or card, even when the vendor only accepts checks, pay over time, schedule batch payments and send international payments. Paid plans add accounting sync, approval workflows, W-9 collection and 1099 automation, and there are receivables features such as payment links. Melio was founded in 2018, is based in New York with offices in Denver and Tel Aviv, and has more than 600 employees. Xero completed its acquisition of Melio in October 2025.

Melio AI features and use cases

  • Captures bill detailsAI Bill Capture extracts vendor, amount, due date and other key details from bills sent by camera, email sync or upload. It is included in every plan, so even the free tier avoids retyping bills before they are paid.
  • Answers bill and vendor questionsAgent Mel, launched on January 28, 2026, answers questions such as the status of a bill, a vendor's payment history or how to set an approval policy in a chat window. Owners and bookkeepers get answers without searching through screens or calling support.
  • Highlights overdue paymentsAgent Mel points out overdue payments and shows cash flow patterns and vendor history. Small teams see which bills need attention first and plan payments around available cash, which helps avoid late fees.

What sets Melio apart

  • Has a free plan and a 90-day free trial on paid plans, with prices published per month and per payment.
  • Lets businesses pay by card even when the vendor only accepts ACH or check, and offers pay over time.
  • Syncs with QuickBooks Online and Desktop, Xero and NetSuite depending on plan.

Where Melio is strongest

Melio is based in New York, says more than 100,000 US businesses and accounting firms use it, and has been part of Xero since 2025.

Questions to ask before you buy Melio

Melio serves businesses in the United States; international payments are possible, but companies need a US setup. Count the transaction fees on top of the plan price, since each plan includes only a set number of free ACH payments. Melio holds a SOC 2 Type II report and ISO 27001, 27017 and 27018 certificates; the reports require an NDA. Check how the Xero ownership affects your roadmap if you use QuickBooks.
