What is Norman?
Norman is an AI bookkeeping service from Berlin for freelancers, sole proprietors and small limited companies in Germany. It books bank transactions, matches receipts, suggests accounts and prepares VAT returns from live data.
Norman covers bookkeeping, unlimited e-invoices, bank synchronization and German tax filings. Depending on the plan, these include the annual cash-basis accounts, income tax, the VAT return, EU sales reporting and, for companies, annual financial statements, corporate tax and the E-Bilanz. Receipts are scanned or forwarded by email, and the company plans Pro and Max include a DATEV export for a tax advisor, while the plans for the self-employed do not list one. Norman AI GmbH is based in Berlin. The app infrastructure runs on providers whose processing takes place in data centers in Frankfurt am Main. The service targets founders who do their own books without a finance team.
Norman AI features and use cases
- Books bank transactionsThe AI bookkeeper categorizes incoming bank transactions, assigns the matching receipts and creates the booking entries. Owners review the result instead of coding each transaction by hand, which keeps the books current between filing dates.
- Matches receipts to paymentsUsers scan receipts or forward them by email, and Norman matches them to the corresponding payments. Missing receipts show up earlier, and the time spent searching statements before a VAT return drops.
- Suggests accounts for recurring movementsFor ongoing bank movements, Norman proposes the fitting account automatically. Recurring costs such as software subscriptions or rent then need only a quick confirmation rather than fresh coding every month.
- Reviews the books continuouslyNorman analyzes the books around the clock to spot possible deductions and flag risks. Owners without accounting training get hints before the year end, when corrections would take more work.
What sets Norman apart

- Covers filings for companies as well, including annual financial statements, corporate tax and the E-Bilanz in the Max plan.
