Sprout Social is the closest match for teams that want a similar all-in-one tool and accept US data storage, and its Essentials plan undercuts Hootsuite for small publishing teams. Swat.io from Vienna fits European teams that need EU storage and a data processing agreement, and Brandwatch fits enterprises that want listening and publishing from one vendor that does not belong to Hootsuite.
- Hootsuite ended its free plan on March 31, 2023 and has sold every self-serve plan per user since 2025: Standard $99, Professional $199 and Advanced $399 per user and month, billed annually.
- For a team of five on annual billing that means $495 to $1,995 per month, depending on the plan.
- Hootsuite's core service runs on AWS in the United States; its listening product Lumen by Talkwalker runs on servers in Germany.
- Talkwalker has belonged to Hootsuite since 2024, so switching to Lumen by Talkwalker does not mean leaving the vendor.
- Cancelling a paid Hootsuite plan stops the renewal, but under its terms you pay until the end of the term and get no refund.
Hootsuite, by its own count 18 years in business, is built for teams that publish, answer messages and report across many social networks from one place. Three reasons to look elsewhere can be traced in Hootsuite's own documents: a bill that now grows with every seat, a free plan that disappeared in 2023, and customer data stored in the United States.
This page sorts three alternatives from our directory by the reason for leaving, with prices from the vendors' own pages as of September 2026, the contract terms that decide your timing, and a plan for exporting data before access ends. We checked every fact on September 30, 2026 at the vendor or in archived copies of its pages. No vendor paid for a mention. The full list of alternatives, the comparison table and the data FAQ follow below the article.
Shortlist: which Hootsuite alternative fits which situation
Sprout SocialFits teams that want the nearest feature match with inbox, publishing, reports and optional listening. Essentials costs $79 per seat per month billed annually for up to 5 social profiles, Professional $299 with unlimited profiles, and there is a 30 day trial without a credit card. All customer data is hosted in the United States.
Swat.ioFits teams in Germany, Austria and Switzerland that need EU data storage and a signed data processing agreement. Plans start at €39 per month for 2 users and 3 channels, the inbox is an add-on at the same price again, and the Vienna vendor holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022.
BrandwatchFits larger companies that mainly use Hootsuite for listening and want to move to a vendor outside the Hootsuite group. Brandwatch, part of Cision, runs its social media management products on AWS and Google Cloud in the EU. Prices come only after a demo.
Three years of plan changes, dated from Hootsuite's own pages
Hootsuite is based in Vancouver. Its plans page changed several times after 2022, and each change can be dated. We rebuilt that history from Hootsuite's press releases, from copies of hootsuite.com/plans stored by the Internet Archive and from press coverage at the time.
On January 1, 2023, the archived plans page still listed a free plan. Professional started at $49 per month billed yearly for 1 user and 10 social accounts, Team covered 3 users and 20 accounts, and Business 5 users and 35 accounts at up to $739 per month. On February 28, 2023, BetaKit reported that the free plan would end on March 31 and that Professional would cost $99 per month. Hootsuite told BetaKit the decision was not a result of Twitter's API changes.
The second shift changed the unit of pricing. The archived page from April 5, 2025 still shows Professional, Team and Enterprise with users bundled into each plan. The copy from May 2, 2025 shows new Standard and Advanced plans priced per user per month, with Standard limited to 5 social accounts and a 30 day trial. The dollar amounts on those pages were loaded by a script and were not archived, so we do not quote them.
The third shift is the product itself. Hootsuite announced the purchase of Talkwalker on April 8, 2024, and on June 24, 2026 it relaunched its portfolio as Social OS: publishing became Perch, the inbox became Nest, Amplify became Parliament and Talkwalker became Lumen by Talkwalker, all connected to a new AI agent called Wisdom. The archived plans page from July 1, 2026 is the first we found with three per-user plans at $99, $199 and $399. On September 30, 2026 the live page confirms those prices, Standard with up to 10 social accounts, and a 14 day trial limited to 10 to 20 posts per day.

Five seats at list price, and why cancelling does not stop the bill
The move to per-seat pricing hits larger teams hardest. Hootsuite now charges every self-serve plan per user, so a team of five on annual billing pays $495 per month on Standard, $995 on Professional and $1,995 on Advanced, before taxes. In January 2023 the Business plan with 5 users included was listed at up to $739 per month. The plans are not identical in features, so read this as a direction, not a like-for-like price increase.
Sprout Social is not the cheap way out for every team. It also charges per seat: Essentials costs $79 per month billed annually or $99 billed monthly, Standard $199, Professional $299 and Advanced $399. Essentials and Standard cover 5 social profiles, Professional unlimited profiles. A five-person team that needs unlimited profiles pays $1,495 on Sprout Professional against $995 on Hootsuite Professional, while a team that only publishes to 5 profiles pays $395 on Sprout Essentials against $495 on Hootsuite Standard.
Swat.io prices by package instead of by head. Small costs €39 per month on monthly billing for 1 workspace, 3 channels and 2 users, Medium €89 for 5 channels and 5 users, Large €199 for 8 channels and 8 users, all excluding VAT. The inbox for replies is an add-on that costs the same amount again per tier, and a 12 month term is 10 percent cheaper. A five-person team with inbox on Medium pays €178 per month. Buffer, which is not in our directory, charges per channel: $5 on Essentials and $10 on Team per channel and month billed yearly, with unlimited team members on Team.
Our directory lists 8 social media management tools, 1 of them with a permanent free plan and 2 priced per user. The calculator below uses only published list prices for Hootsuite and Sprout Social, the two vendors that charge per seat. Contract timing matters as much as the price. Hootsuite's plans page says "cancel anytime", but its terms of service say that self-serve plans renew automatically and that a customer who cancels must pay for the rest of the term without a refund. Check the renewal date of an annual plan before you plan the switch.

Where the data sits: United States at Hootsuite and Sprout, EU at Swat.io
Hootsuite does not hide where it stores data, but you have to read the sub-processor list to see it. The core Hootsuite services run on Amazon Web Services in the United States, the database on MongoDB in the United States, and the AI features use Google Cloud, OpenAI and Microsoft as AI service providers, all with US locations. Lumen by Talkwalker is the main exception and runs on Hetzner servers in Germany.
Transfers to the United States are lawful for companies certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, for which the European Commission adopted an adequacy decision on July 10, 2023. Hootsuite lists AWS under that framework and other US providers under standard contractual clauses. For teams whose data protection officer asks for EU storage anyway, the field narrows quickly.
Sprout Social is no alternative on that point. It states that all components of its application, including customer data, are hosted in the United States, with AWS in Northern Virginia and Oregon and a Google Cloud backup in Iowa. Swat.io from Vienna stores data on servers in the EU, signs a data processing agreement with every customer and has done so since 2018, holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022, offers a standard DORA addendum for financial firms and classifies its AI features as limited risk under the EU AI Act. Brandwatch hosts its social media management products on AWS and Google Cloud in the EU; only its listening infrastructure sits in the US and UK and holds public posts.
The table below comes from our directory, with the corrections we made during this check. Our records had no hosting location for Hootsuite and no headquarters for Talkwalker, which is in Luxembourg, and Swat.io's prices were not recorded because they only appear after a script loads. The template list under this article also names OpusClip, which cuts long videos into short clips and replaces only a small part of what Hootsuite does.

Match the alternative to your reason for leaving
The right replacement depends less on features than on why you are leaving. Listening is the first fork. Hootsuite bought Talkwalker, and since June 24, 2026 its listening product is called Lumen by Talkwalker and runs inside Hootsuite's Social OS.
A move to Lumen by Talkwalker therefore keeps you with the same vendor, the same terms and the same account team. Teams that want listening from a separate company can look at Brandwatch, which Cision bought on June 1, 2021 and combined with the Falcon.io social media management suite. Brandwatch sells publishing, engagement and listening, and quotes prices only after a demo.
If you mainly schedule posts and answer comments, the choice is about data location and price. Sprout Social is the closest match in scope and suits teams that accept US hosting. Swat.io suits European teams with a handful of channels that want EU storage and a package price. Sprout Social offers a 30 day trial without a credit card, Swat.io 21 days without payment details.
Small teams, nonprofits and those searching for a free option have different choices. Hootsuite offers a nonprofit discount on some plans but no free plan. Buffer has a free plan for up to 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts per channel and 1 user, and Swat.io offers discounts to small nonprofits. Postiz (AGPL-3.0) and Mixpost (MIT) are open source schedulers that can run on your own server, in which case your team handles hosting, updates and backups. Neither Buffer nor the open source tools are in our directory yet.

AI features you can use today
Hootsuite's current AI is Wisdom, an agent it released on June 24, 2026 as part of Social OS. The plans page says every plan runs on it. Standard includes generating posts and images with AI, and Professional adds trend forecasts up to 90 days ahead and automated inbox replies. Hootsuite also launched connectors based on the Model Context Protocol, so other AI tools can read data from Perch, Nest and Lumen.
Sprout Social includes its AI agent Trellis in every plan, with 100 AI agent credits per seat and month. Enhance Post by AI Assist starts with Professional, and Enhance Reply by AI Assist and sentiment in the Smart Inbox need Advanced. Swat.io lists AI features in its smallest plan and adds AI reply suggestions and automatic ticket prioritization in the inbox add-on from Medium. Brandwatch markets its assistant Iris across its suite.
The point for a switch is where the AI runs. Hootsuite names Google Cloud, OpenAI and Microsoft as AI service providers with US locations in its sub-processor list. Ask each alternative for the same list before you let AI draft replies to customers, because those replies can contain names and complaints.
Before access ends: calendar export, analytics history and the works council
Export first, cancel second. Hootsuite's Planner exports the calendar as a CSV file, filtered by social account, post status or campaign. One export covers up to a year of content, and since an update on July 27, 2026 the file also carries internal comments on each post. Run one export per year of history you want to keep.
Analytics need more care, because the new tool cannot always fetch old numbers. Meta's documentation for the Instagram API says media metrics are stored for up to 2 years and that story metrics are available for only 24 hours. Any story results and anything older than two years exist only in the reports you already have, so download Hootsuite reports for those periods before the account closes.
Close the data protection loop in writing. Under Article 28(3)(g) GDPR, a processor must delete or return all personal data at the end of the service, at the customer's choice. Ask Hootsuite to confirm deletion once your exports are done, and read the retention rule of the new vendor as well: Brandwatch, for example, keeps data for up to 30 days after a contract ends and then deletes or anonymizes it.
In Germany, the works council has a say. Under section 87(1) no. 6 of the Works Constitution Act, it must agree to technical systems suited to monitor employee behavior or performance. Hootsuite Advanced measures team performance and efficiency, and Sprout Social Advanced has team productivity reports, so a switch between such plans belongs on the works council agenda early.
