Jedox is the closest Vena alternative for teams that want to keep Excel and need hosting in Germany. Cube fits midsize companies that plan in both Excel and Google Sheets, and Pigment suits teams ready to move modeling into the browser, with data in Frankfurt. Datarails is the Excel-connected option for small FP&A teams in North America and the UK.
- Vena publishes no prices; its Professional and Complete plans are sold by quote with Power User, Contributor and View Only licenses.
- Vena's platform APIs include import, but export costs extra, which matters for any later switch.
- Vena hosts in Canada, the United States and an EU region on AWS or Azure.
- Three Vena AI agents are generally available; the Scenario Agent is marked coming soon.
- Jedox runs on Azure with a region in Germany, and Pigment stores data in Frankfurt or Oregon.
Vena is built for finance teams that live in Excel. Budgets, forecasts, management reports and consolidation run on a central database, while planners keep working in spreadsheets they already know. That design wins projects in companies where the controller would never give up Excel, and it is the reason many teams choose Vena over browser-only planning tools.
The same design is also why teams compare. Some want modeling outside Excel, some plan in Google Sheets, some need hosting in a specific EU country, and many want a price before the third demo. This page checks Vena's licensing, hosting and AI features as of September 26, 2026, sorts four alternatives by situation and ends with the steps for moving models and actuals without losing history.
Shortlist: which Vena alternative fits which situation
JedoxFits companies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland that want Excel integration and data hosted in Germany. Jedox runs on Microsoft Azure with regions such as Germany West Central and Switzerland North. It charges a monthly fee per named user, billed annually; AI planning is part of the Professional package.
PigmentFits finance teams that want to model in the browser and share plans across departments. Pigment stores data in Frankfurt or Oregon on Google Cloud and offers a sovereign option on S3NS. A 14-day trial without a credit card lets you test before a sales call.
CubeFits midsize companies whose planners split between Excel and Google Sheets. Every Cube plan includes unlimited users, dimensions and dashboards plus four types of AI agents. Hosting is named in the United States only, which rules it out where EU hosting is mandatory.
DatarailsFits small FP&A teams that want to stay in Excel and get reporting and board decks faster. Plans run from Professional to Expert, priced on request, with the AI suite from Professional. Hosting is named in the US, Canada and the UK.
Excel as strength and limit
Vena's pricing page describes the platform as full Microsoft Excel integration on top of a central database that combines a relational store with in-memory OLAP. Planners open templates in Excel, enter numbers, and the database handles versions, workflows and permissions. For controllers with years of spreadsheet models, that lowers the barrier to a planning system.
The limit shows when a company wants more people to plan. Department heads who do not use Excel daily still work in spreadsheets, and teams that run on Google Workspace have no native path. Some finance leaders also want driver-based models that live outside individual workbooks.
That is where the alternatives divide. Jedox and Datarails stay close to Excel. Cube adds Google Sheets. Pigment and Planful put modeling in the browser and treat Excel as one of several outputs. The comparison below shows the trade off in two columns.
Planners keep familiar templates; adoption in finance is fast; people outside finance still work in spreadsheets.
Models live in one place and department heads plan in a web interface; finance teams give up some spreadsheet habits.

Licensing and contract: what Vena does and does not publish
Vena sells two plans without published prices. Professional includes the Vena platform, a customer success manager, standard support with 24/7 monitoring, the customer portal and Vena Copilot. Complete adds Vena Insights for AI-based FP&A reporting, premium support, a sandbox environment and expert managed services, and Professional customers can buy these items separately.
Licenses come in three roles: Power User for model owners, Contributor for people who enter plans and follow workflows, and View Only for report readers. The mix of roles drives the price, so count honestly how many people will build models and how many only submit numbers.
One line on the pricing page deserves attention before signing: platform APIs include import, but export costs extra. For a planning system that becomes the home of budgets, forecasts and actuals, an export charge affects how easily you can move later. Nonprofits and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central users may get discounts.
The alternatives are not more open on price. Jedox, Cube, Datarails and Planful quote as well, and Pigment offers a trial but no public price list. The difference is in unit and scope: Jedox charges per named user, Cube includes unlimited users in every plan, and Datarails states there are no consultant fees.

Hosting: EU region versus German region
Vena's trust page names data centers in Canada, the United States and EU cloud regions, run on AWS or Azure, with SOC 1 and SOC 2 Type II audits by Deloitte. Customers choose the region. For most European companies an EU region settles the question. For some, especially in regulated industries or with works councils that ask for a German location, it does not.
Jedox lists Azure regions in Germany West Central, Switzerland North, France Central, UK South, the Netherlands and North Europe, plus regions in North America, the Middle East and Asia. Pigment stores data in europe-west3 in Frankfurt or us-west1 in Oregon and offers a sovereign cloud on S3NS, certified under the French SecNumCloud scheme.
Cube, Datarails and Planful name only regions outside the EU. That does not rule them out under GDPR, since transfers can rest on contractual safeguards, but it adds a transfer assessment to the project. Ask each vendor for the data processing agreement under Article 28 GDPR and the list of subprocessors before the technical evaluation, not after.
The decision tree after this section combines hosting with the interface question. It points to one alternative to test first.

Up to three questions, based on vendor pages as of September 26, 2026.
Does your finance team want to keep Excel as the main working surface?
AI agents: what is live today
Vena's AI page lists three agents as generally available. The Planning Agent builds budgets and forecasts in Excel from plain language requests, the Reporting Agent creates reports with drill-down, and the Analytics Agent produces variance and scenario analysis. A Scenario Agent for enterprise modeling of cost, pricing or acquisitions is marked coming soon. Vena builds on Microsoft Azure OpenAI and states that customer data is not used to train publicly accessible models.
Among the alternatives the AI offer differs mostly by plan. Cube includes four agent types in every plan and an MCP server that connects outside AI assistants. Jedox puts its AI planning model into the Professional package. Datarails places its AI suite in Professional and AI Storyboards for board decks in Premium.
Pigment lets you judge its agents during a 14-day trial, which includes AI credits within limits on storage and calculation. For a fair test, give each finalist the same task: explain last month's largest cost variance from your own data, and compare what comes back.

The planning niche in our directory
Our directory lists 57 tools for budgeting and forecasting, Vena included, and 14 of them state an EU hosting option. 43 publish no prices and quote only on request.
The niche is broader than FP&A suites. It also holds liquidity planning tools such as Agicap, Tidely and Commitly and HR suites with workforce planning. The wider FP&A category adds reporting and analytics tools. The tile field below sorts every tool by the hosting location it states: Germany, another EU country, only regions outside the EU, or no region we could find.
The largest group is the last one. Many planning vendors do not name a hosting region on their public pages at all, so the region question belongs in the first call. The full list of budgeting and forecasting tools shows each profile with its sources and the date of our last check.

Moving models and actuals out of Vena
Negotiate the exit before the entry. Since export APIs cost extra at Vena, ask for an export of models, versions and actuals as part of the renewal or termination terms. In the EU the Data Act has applied since September 12, 2025; it requires providers of data processing services to support switching and bans switching charges from January 12, 2027.
Rebuild, do not copy. A planning model in Pigment or Cube follows a different logic than a Vena template, so use the switch to remove dimensions nobody uses. Keep at least two years of actuals and the last approved budget in the new system, and archive older versions as files.
Plan one cycle in parallel. Run the next forecast in both tools, compare the totals by cost center and let department heads try the new input screens before Vena is switched off.
