How to choose AI planning and forecasting software (October 2026)

Planning software keeps budgets, rolling forecasts and scenarios in one model instead of scattered spreadsheets. The AI generates a baseline forecast from actuals, detecting trend and seasonality, corrects outliers, explains the drivers behind a number and simulates scenarios from a question. Several tools also build or change model logic from a plain-language description. Controllers still set the assumptions and decide which forecast goes to management.

Anaplan's CoModeler generates model structures, refines formulas and maintains documentation. Valsight from Berlin lets a simulation agent derive scenarios from a question, which users then approve. Cube refreshes rolling forecasts with new actuals and works inside Excel and Google Sheets. IBM Planning Analytics runs on the TM1 engine and is available as SaaS, hybrid or on premises. Farseer from Zagreb splits the work between agents for analysis, scenarios and model building.

Check the data feed first. Actuals from DATEV, SAP, NetSuite or your consolidation tool should load automatically and be mapped the same way every month. Ask whether an AI forecast shows its drivers and confidence ranges, so that controllers can defend it in a meeting. Model changes made by an agent need a version history and an approval. Plans contain sensitive figures such as salaries, so check role-based permissions, the hosting location, the data processing agreement and whether your data trains the vendor's models.

Questions about AI planning and forecasting software (October 2026)

What is a rolling forecast?

A forecast that is updated regularly, for example every month, and always looks the same number of months ahead. It replaces the single annual budget as the main steering tool in many companies.

How much history does an AI forecast need?

Most models need at least two to three years of monthly actuals to detect seasonality reliably. With less history or after a major change in the business, the forecast relies more on the controller's assumptions.

Can I keep planning in Excel?

Several tools in this niche, such as Cube and Vena, use Excel or Google Sheets as the interface and store the data centrally. That lowers the switch for teams that do not want to leave spreadsheets.
