AI tools for CV screening and matching

CV screening tools read incoming résumés and decide, or help a recruiter decide, which ones deserve a closer look. The AI extracts skills, titles, dates and education into structured fields, then matches that structure against a role's requirements to produce a ranked shortlist. Some tools stop at parsing and matching; others go further and score or grade candidates outright, which is where a human still needs to stay firmly in the loop.

Textkernel, now part of Bullhorn, parses and matches résumés as a data layer under many other recruiting systems rather than as a standalone product. KitaLulus, Indonesia's largest job platform, cut the review time per application from around 30 minutes to about 2 with its screening. IKAI HR, from Turkey, runs CV analysis and scoring on Google's Gemini models plus an AI assistant for HR questions. JobJack applies its JobFIT AI ranking algorithm to entry-level retail hiring in South Africa.

CV screening is a textbook case of high-risk AI under the EU AI Act, since it directly filters who a human recruiter even sees. In Germany, this typically requires works council agreement on the selection criteria the algorithm applies. Ask for the tool's documented accuracy and bias testing, not just a vendor's claim, and confirm rejected candidates get a way to request a human review of the decision.

Questions

How accurate is AI CV screening compared to a human recruiter?

On structured, well-defined criteria, AI screening tends to be more consistent than a tired recruiter reading résumé number 200. It's weaker on judging context a résumé alone doesn't show.

Can AI CV screening discriminate against candidates illegally?

Yes, if it's trained on biased historical hiring data or uses proxies correlated with protected characteristics. That's exactly why EU AI Act documentation and bias testing requirements exist.

Should I tell candidates their CV was screened by AI?

Best practice, and increasingly a legal expectation under transparency rules, is to disclose it plainly and give candidates a way to ask for a human review.
